Light in the midst of darkness: Albania

Besa, “to keep the promise”

The American Sephardi Federation commends the brave Muslim and Christian Albanians who ensured that their Jewish compatriots as well as Jewish refugees survived the Holocaust. Faleminderit!

One Muslim-majority country in Europe emerged from the horrors of the Holocaust with a larger Jewish population than it initially had: Albania.

Besa is the term for the highest ethical code in Albania. It means “to keep the promise.” And the Albanians did. An estimated 600 to 1,800 Jews who escaped the German Reich prior to WWII were saved in Albania.
