“Stolpersteine’ Stones of Remembrance to be Laid at the Port of Thessaloniki for Jewish Victims of Nazis”  By Kerry Kolasa-Sikiaridi, Greek Reporter Five “Stolpersteine” stones were set in the port of Salonica on 19 October to commemorate Jewish port workers murdered by the Nazis. Developed by the German artist, Gunter Deming, to remember victims of the Holocaust and literally meaning, “stumbling stones or blocks,” the “Stolpersteine” are commemorative brass plaques placed in the pavement, “at the last place of residency or work of the victims before they were deported.”

“Bridging the Gap between Cultures: A Syrian Jewish Artist in Jerusalem” By Katie Beiter, The Media Line Lenore Mizrachi-Cohen is a Brooklyn-born, Syrian-Jewish artist based in Jerusalem who practices Arabic calligraphy, taking Arabic proverbs “that her father used to read to her,” and then reworking them, “to apply to modern life.” For instance, she illustrates the proverb, “To the intelligent, a hint is sufficient,” by showing “soldiers standing guard at Jaffa Gate… Israeli soldiers must remain attentive to every little movement… therefore, to the intelligent (the soldiers), any hint (any sighting or movement) is sufficient enough evidence.”

“Egyptian Jews: Down memory lane with famous artists, actors”  By Ashraf Abdulhamid, Al Arabiya There were ~90,000 Jews in Egypt circa 1948, while today the number has dropped to approximately thirty. Noting that Egyptian Jewish families were deeply involved in Egyptian culture and the arts, Al Arabiya decided to revisit “some of the big names among Egyptian Jews who left their mark in the fields of art, theater, cinema and journalism,” including Yaqub Sanu, Togo Mizrahi, Nijma Ibrahim, Leila Mourad, Najwa Salem, Rakia Ibrahim, Kitty Fotsaty, and Dawood Hosni.
