“Tales from Sudan: ‘I am a Jew and I need to leave this country’” By World Jewish Congress Archive After the 1967 Six Day war, the 1,000 members of Sudan’s Jewish community found it practically impossible to leave the country. So they left under false pretenses. One member of the community remembers how he was vacationing in England when the war broke out, trapping his brother in Sudan: “My brother that stayed, he was 21 and he wanted papers to leave the country. But they wouldn’t give him, they put him in prison overnight to interrogate him. And not just him, all the young Jewish men.”

Today, a few thousand Jews live in Shanghai, but with trade between Israel and China on the rise, the Jewish community is set to expand again.
