ASF’s Institute of Jewish Experience presents:
From Constantine to Jerusalem – The Journey of Algerian Rabbi Eliahou Allouche
Algerian Judaism is distinguished by three main traits: authenticity, diversity, singularity. These traits are engendered in the complexity of the history of Jews of Algeria, a side that remains hidden and understudied because of the impact of the colonial period which summarizes the Jewish presence of 2000 years.
That’s why it’s important to shed more light on an important figure, Rabbi Eliahou Allouche whose named in Arabic is “Sidi el Bahi,” from the nineteenth-century. His exceptional career shows us how the Algerian Rabbi faced the challenges of modernity, posed by French colonialism and the Crémieux decree.
