SUMMARY:Bloomsday Reading - Finnegans Wake
DESCRIPTION:The American Sephardi Federation\, and Centro Primo Levi present: \nBloomsday Reading\nFor several years\, Centro Primo Levi marked Bloomsday\, tracing Joyce’s footsteps in Trieste\, his friendship with Italo Svevo\, and the birth of a text that redefined literature while delving deeply into an ancient understanding of language.  \nThis year\, the American Sephardi Federation’s curator\, Yves Seban\, will read from  James Joyce’s texts and from the Italian translation. The public reading induces vertigo and exhilaration\, exhaling the dream-like quality of Joyce’s prose. \nMonday\, 16 June at 7:00PM \n@Bookhouse \nASF Sixth Floor\, 15 West 16th Street \nSome background \nIn the late 1990s\, when the art galleries were still in Soho\, the Paula Cooper Gallery offered its space to anyone who wanted to read full works by James Joyce and Gertrude Stein in twenty-four hours. \nThe readings ended when the galleries moved to Chelsea. Seban participated in most of those readings and began to develop his own version\, which included excerpts of Italian translation by the late Luigi Schenoni (Musée des Arts Océaniens et Africains\, Paris\, 1997; Festival des Allumés\, Nantes\,1998; Galerie du Jour-agnès b.\,1999; and the Chiba Joyce Parlor\, Japan\,1998). \nAbout Yves Seban \nA long-time collaborator of the American Sephardi Federation\, Yves Seban’s background starts in the mid-80s Paris fashion world\, working for French luxury brands\, notably for French fashion icon agnès b. \nYves then turned to translation of art texts\, scripts\, film reviews\, while transcribing/translating\, in-studio\, the LouiseBourgeois’ personal diaries\, and is writing a screen-adaptation of Jun’ichiro Tanizaki’s Some Prefer Nettles. Among his contributions to the Sephardi Festival are two filmed interviews with Albert Memmi and Helène Cixous\, recipients of the Pomegranate Award.

SUMMARY:From the Sacred to the Utilitarian…Exploring the Soul of Objects
DESCRIPTION:The American Sephardi Federation\, the UJA-Federation of New York\, the Moise Safra Center and Ghiora Aharoni Design Studio present: \nFrom the Sacred to the Utilitarian… Exploring the Soul of Objects\nInspired by the Sephardic/Mizrahi connection with mysticism and the Zohar’s interpretation of the universe as deeply metaphorical\, Ghiora Aharoni will explore the notion that objects—from the antique to the contemporary\, from sacred icons to the everyday—possess a unique resonance\, informed by their intended use as well as the existence they have witnessed. \nHis lecture\, entitled From the Sacred to the Utilitarian…Exploring the Soul of Objects\, will trace the narratives of objects—ranging from a yad created with Zoharic text and Yemenite headdresses to an antique Moroccan menorah and vintage kerosene stoves used on Shabbat in Israel—the identity they embody and how those narratives can be harnessed\, recontextualized and elevated into socio-cultural avatars of both our individual and collective humanity. \nIllustrating these ideas with animations\, still images and short films of artwork and installations created in his artistic practice over the course of nearly two decades\, the lecture will survey the metaphorical\, allegorical and inspiring narratives that exist within objects and their capacity to illuminate facets of our existence\, and ultimately\, humanity’s interconnectivity. \nMonday\, 9 June at 3:00PM \n@The Moise Safra Center \n130 E 82nd Street \nAbout the Artist: \nGhiora Aharoni founded his multi-disciplinary studio for art and design in New York City in 2004. His work has been exhibited internationally in museums\, institutions and galleries\, and is in private collections and foundations in North America\, Europe\, the UAE\, Israel and India. A graduate of Yale University\, Aharoni’s work is in the collections of The Pompidou Centre\, The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, The Vatican\, The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art\, The National Gallery of Art in Washington\, D.C.\, The Morgan Library & Museum\, The Huntington Library and Museum\, The Anu Museum and he was selected as Princeton University’s 2024 Belknap Visitor in the Humanities. In 2022\, Aharoni received the ASF Pomegranate Lifetime Achievement Award for Art and Design.

SUMMARY:The Trial of Adolf Eichmann
DESCRIPTION:American Sephardi Federation presents: \nThe Trial of Adolf Eichmann\nAdapted on stage by David Serero \nInspired by actual events\, this powerful drama takes audiences on a haunting journey through one of the most infamous trials in history\, examining the depths of human evil and the quest for justice.  \nDon’t miss this compelling and thought-provoking theatrical experience as the world premiere of “The Trial of Adolf Eichmann” opens in July 2024 at the Center for Jewish History\, inviting audiences to reflect on the lessons of history and the enduring struggle for justice and reconciliation. \n21 July at 7:00PM EST \n22 July at 8:00PM EST (Premiere) \n23 July at 3:00PM EST \n25 July at 8:00PM EST \n@the Center for Jewish History \nSign-up Now!\nTickets: $26-$36 \nFor questions and more details please call 855.688.7277 (ext.1) \nThe play revolves around the trial of Adolf Eichmann\, one of the principal architects of the Holocaust\, who orchestrated the systematic murder of millions of Jews during World War II. Set in Jerusalem in 1961\, the story follows the trial of Eichmann\, a former Nazi officer captured by Israeli agents in Argentina and brought to Israel to face justice. As the courtroom drama unfolds\, audiences are confronted with the moral dilemmas faced by the prosecution\, defense\, and the international community. Eichmann’s unapologetic defense\, which hinges on his claim of “just following orders\,” sparks intense debates about responsibility\, collaboration\, and the nature of evil. The play delves into the legal and ethical complexities of the trial\, exploring how the pursuit of justice can intersect with the need for closure\, healing\, and reconciliation in the aftermath of unspeakable atrocities. David Serero’s masterful writing combines historical accuracy and dramatic tension to create a riveting theatrical experience. “The Trial of Adolf Eichmann” challenges its audience to grapple with profound questions about humanity’s capacity for cruelty and the enduring quest for accountability in the face of unimaginable horror. With a talented ensemble cast\, David Serero’s direction\, and meticulous attention to detail\, this Off-Broadway production promises to be a thought-provoking and emotionally charged exploration of a pivotal historical moment. “The Trial of Adolf Eichmann” is a timely reminder of the importance of remembering the past and seeking justice\, even when the wounds are deep and the scars are still fresh.

SUMMARY:Socrates\, Moses\, and the Long Fight Against Idolatry
DESCRIPTION:The American Sephardi Federation presents: \nSocrates\, Moses\, and the Long Fight Against Idolatry\nJoin us for a fascinating discussion celebrating the launch of Matt Gatton’s new book\, The Shadows of Socrates: The Heresy\, War\, and Treachery Behind the Trial of Socrates. \nSunday\, 14 April at 4:30PM ET \nIn-Person @ the ASF – Center for Jewish History \nTickets: $15-$500 \nThe trial of the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates is widely considered the most famous trial of all time. At age 70\, he was charged with impiety (a religious crime) and corrupting the youth\, but the reasons for these charges were left unexplained\, as the prosecution’s case was not recorded. There’s a reason for this: Socrates triggered the first great battle between philosophy and religion when he launched a searing critique of Athens’ most important and secretive idolatrous cult. Socrates has more in common with Moses\, Maimonides\, and Spinoza than you might ever have imagined. Sometimes the light of true reason must fight in the shadows.

SUMMARY:Why Spinoza Matters Now: Truth and Freedom in America Today
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the American Sephardi Federation and Jewish Lives at Yale University Press: \nJoin us for a lively and timely discussion celebrating the launch of Ian Buruma’s new book\, Spinoza: Freedom’s Messiah. Buruma will be joined on the panel by Steven Nadler\, Rebecca Newberger Goldstein\, & Clémence Boulouque \nSunday\, 31 March at 3:00PM EST \nIn-Person @ the ASF – Center for Jewish History \nTickets: $15-$500 \n350 years after his death\, the philosophy of Baruch Spinoza remains vitally relevant — especially in this period of deep political division and with the threat to liberal democracy not only in Europe and elsewhere\, but right here at home. Spinoza was the most open and important proponent of democracy\, toleration\, politics free from religious sectarian interference\, and freedom of expression in the early modern period. He was also “cancelled” (Herem) by Amsterdam’s Jewish community. \nSee this New Yorker review\, “Baruch Spinoza and the Art of Thinking in Dangerous Times\,” as well as Buruma’s latest\, “The 17th-Century Heretic We Could Really Use Now\,” in The New York Times \n \nBard College Professor Ian Buruma\, author of Spinoza: Freedom’s Messiah (Jewish Lives – Yale University Press) \n \nModerator\, Columbia University Professor Clémence Boulouque\, author of Another Modernity: Elia Benamozegh’s Jewish Universalism (Stanford University Press) \n \nUniversity of Wisconsin-Madison Professor Steven Nadler\, author of Spinoza: A Life (Cambridge University Press) and Menasseh ben Israel: Rabbi of Amsterdam (Jewish Lives – Yale University Press) \n \nDr. Rebecca Newberger Goldstein\, author of Betraying Spinoza: The Renegade Jew Who Gave Us Modernity (Jewish Encounters Series)
