SUMMARY:The Persian Experience: Book Discussion with Roya Hakakian
DESCRIPTION:The Persian Experience: \nBook Discussion with Roya Hakakian \n “Journey from the Land of No” Roya Hakakian recalls her childhood and adolescence in prerevolutionary Iran with candor and verve. The result is a beautifully written coming-of-age story about one deeply intelligent and perceptive girl’s attempt to find an authentic voice of her own at a time of cultural closing and repression. \nRemarkably\, she manages to re-create a time and place dominated by religious fanaticism\, violence\, and fear with an open heart and often with great humor. \nWednesday\, 17 February at 12:00PM EST \nRoya Hakakian is the author of “Assassins of the Turquoise Palace” and “Journey from the Land of No\,” and has published two collections of poetry in Persian. Her essays have appeared in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal\, and on NPR’s All Things Considered. She has collaborated on programming for leading journalism units in network television\, including 60 Minutes. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship\, and served on the editorial board of World Affairs. Since 2015\, she has taught at THREAD\, a writing workshop at Yale\, and is a fellow at the Davenport College at Yale. SUMMARY:New Works Wednesdays with Esther Amini
DESCRIPTION:New Works Wednesdays with Esther Amini \nEsther Amini discusses her new work “Concealed.”  \nThursday\, 21 January at 1:00PM EST \nEsther Amini grew up in Queens\, New York\, during the freewheeling 1960s. She also grew up in a Persian-Jewish household\, the American-born daughter of parents who had fled Mashhad\, Iran. In Concealed\, she tells the story of being caught between these two worlds: the dutiful daughter of tradition-bound parents who hungers for more self-determination than tradition allows. \nExploring the roots of her father’s deep silences and explosive temper\, her mother’s flamboyance and flights from home\, and her own sense of indebtedness to her Iranian-born brothers\, Amini uncovers the story of her parents’ early years in Mashhad\, Iran’s holiest Muslim city; the little-known history of Mashhad’s underground Jews; the incident that steeled her mother’s resolve to leave; and her parents’ arduous journey to the U.S.\, where they faced a new threat to their traditions: the threat of freedom. Determined to protect his daughter from corruption\, Amini’s father prohibits talk\, books\, education\, and pushes an early Persian marriage instead. Can she resist? Should she? Focused intently on what she stands to gain\, Amini comes to see what she also stands to lose: a family and community bound by food\, celebrations\, sibling escapades\, and unexpected acts of devotion by parents to whom she feels invisible. \nEsther Amini is a writer\, painter\, and psychoanalytic psychotherapist in private practice. Her short stories have appeared in Elle\, Lilith\, Tablet\, The Jewish Week\, Barnard Magazine\, Inscape Literary\, and Proximity. She was named one of Aspen Words’ two best emerging memoirists and awarded its Emerging Writer Fellowship in 2016 based on her memoir entitled: “Concealed.” Her pieces have been performed by Jewish Women’s Theatre in Los Angeles and in Manhattan\, and was chosen by JWT as their Artist-in-Residence in 2019. \nSponsorship opportunities available:\ninfo@americansephardi.org

SUMMARY:New Works Wednesdays with Edith Scott Saavedra
DESCRIPTION:New Works Wednesdays with Edith Scott Saavedra \n Edith Scott Saavedra discusses her new work “The Lamps of Albarracin.” \nWednesday\, 13 January at 12:00PM EST \nHistorical fiction author Edith Scott Saavedra explores her journey to bring alive the culture and history of Sephardic Aragon and true stories of resistance to the Spanish Inquisition by giving voice to women and girls. Inspired by traditions passed down from mother to daughter for generations\, the author would discover in the historical records episodes of resistance long suppressed by the monarchy and church in Spain\, write a historical novel in English and Spanish editions\, and set out to bring this content to students in Spain and the United States.\n“The Lamps of Albarracín” is a fictional first-person narrative by a Sephardic girl that recounts the arrival of the Spanish Inquisition into the Kingdom of Aragon in the 1480s. It is based on extensive review of Spanish Inquisition testimony and historical research. The novel gives voice to the diverse peoples of late-medieval Aragon – Jews\, Muslims\, Christians and persons of mixed heritage\, with a focus on women and true stories of tolerance and courage. It also celebrates the rich culture and traditions of multicultural Aragon in the years prior to the Expulsion of the Jews. \nEdith Scott Saavedra earned her BA and JD degrees from Harvard University. She has had a distinguished career as an international lawyer\, business consultant and nonfiction author. The Lamps of Albarracín/Los Candiles de Albarracín\, her first novel\, has received media attention throughout the Spanish speaking world\, including Radio Sefarad Madrid\, Sefarad.es\, eSefarad\, Libertad Digital\, Radio Aragón\, Semanario Hebreo and Radio Las 2 Orillas Bogotá. \nSponsorship opportunities available:\ninfo@americansephardi.org

SUMMARY:New Works Wednesdays with Cedric Cohen-Skalli
DESCRIPTION:New Works Wednesdays with Cedric Cohen-Skalli  \nCedric Cohen-Skalli discusses his new book\, “Don Isaac Abravanel: An Intellectual Biography.” \nCedric Cohen-Skalli teaches early modern and modern Jewish philosophy at the University of Haifa and is the director of the Bucerius Institute for the Research of Contemporary German History and Society. \nWednesday\, 25 November at 12:00PM EST \nDon Isaac Abravanel (1437–1508) was one of the great inventors of Jewish modernity. A merchant\, banker\, and court financier\, a scholar versed in both Jewish and Christian writings\, a preacher and exegete\, a prominent political actor in royal entourages and Jewish communities\, Abravanel was one of the greatest leaders and thinkers of Iberian Jewry in the aftermath of the expulsion of 1492. This book\, the first new intellectual biography of Abravanel in twenty years\, depicts his life in three cultural milieus—Portugal\, Castile\, and post-expulsion Italy—and analyzes his major literary accomplishments in each period. Abravanel was a traditionalist with innovative ideas\, a man with one foot in the Middle Ages and the other in the Renaissance. An erudite scholar\, author of a monumental exegetical opus that is still studied today\, and an avid book collector\, he was a transitional figure\, defined by an age of contradictions. Yet\, it is these very contradictions that make him such an important personality for understanding the dawn of Jewish modernity. \nSponsorship opportunities available:\ninfo@americansephardi.org

Through this 2-part learning series\, we will explore the multilayered\, rich story of this millennia-old community—discovering the ways in which they have developed their mosaic culture through a dynamic interaction with the dominant and changing societies surrounding them.\nOur discussion will also shed light on how their experiences fit into the broader historical saga of the Jewish people. \nThursdays\n12 and 19 November at 12:00PM EDT \nBorn in Uzbekistan\, raised in Seattle\, and currently based in New York City\, Ruben Shimonov is a Jewish educator\, community builder\, social entrepreneur and artist with a passion for Jewish diversity and pluralism. SUMMARY:New Works Wednesdays with Jane S. Gerber
DESCRIPTION:New Works Wednesdays with Jane S. Gerber \nJane S. Gerber discusses her new book\, “Cities of Splendour in the Shaping of Sephardi History.” \nJane S. Gerber is Professor Emerita of History and director of the Institute for Sephardic Studies at the Graduate Center of the CUNY. She is a past president of the Association for Jewish Studies. She has been a visiting professor at Harvard\, Yale\, Columbia\, the Hebrew University\, the University of Pennsylvania\, and the Jewish Theological Seminary\, and has lectured widely in the United States and elsewhere. She headed the Advisory Board of the American Sephardi Federation and served on the Academic Advisory Council of the Center for Jewish History and the Academic Board of the Rothberg School of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. \nWednesday\, 18 November at 12:00PM EST \nSephardi identity has meant different things at different times\, but has always entailed a connection with Spain\, from which the Jews were expelled in 1492. While Sephardi Jews have lived in numerous cities and towns throughout history\, certain cities had a greater impact in the shaping of their culture. This book focuses on those that may be considered most important\, from Cordoba in the tenth century to Toledo\, Venice\, Safed\, Istanbul\, Salonica\, and Amsterdam at the dawn of the seventeenth century. Each served as a venue in which a particular dimension of Sephardi Jewry either took shape or was expressed in especially intense form. Significantly\, these cities were mostly heterogeneous in their population and culture – half of them under Christian rule and half under Muslim rule – and this too shaped the Sephardi world-view and attitude. While Sephardim cultivated a distinctive identity\, they felt at home in the cultures of their adopted lands. Drawing upon a variety of both primary and secondary sources\, Jane Gerber demonstrates that Sephardi history and culture have always been multifaceted. \nSponsorship opportunities available:\ninfo@americansephardi.org

SUMMARY:New Works Wednesdays with Stanley Mirvis
DESCRIPTION:New Works Wednesdays with Stanley Mirvis \nStanley Mirvis an assistant professor of history in the School of Historical\, Philosophical\, and Religious Studies\, and the Harold and Jean Grossman Chair of Jewish Studies\, at Arizona State University will discuss his new book\, “The Jews of Eighteenth-Century Jamaica: A Testamentary History of a Diaspora in Transition.”  \nAn in-depth look at the Portuguese Jews of Jamaica and their connections to broader European and Atlantic trade networks.\n \nWednesday\, 11 November at 12:00PM EST \nBased on last wills and testaments composed by Jamaican Jews between 1673 and 1815\, this book explores the social and familial experiences of one of the most critical yet understudied nodes of the Atlantic Portuguese Jewish Diaspora. Stanley Mirvis examines how Jamaica’s Jews put down roots as traders\, planters\, pen keepers\, physicians\, fishermen\, and metalworkers\, and reveals how their presence shaped the colony as much as settlement in the tropical West Indies transformed the lives of the island’s Jews. \nSponsorship opportunities available:\ninfo@americansephardi.org

SUMMARY:New Works Wednesdays with Shalva Weil
DESCRIPTION:New Works Wednesdays with Shalva Weil \nShalva Weil a Senior Researcher at the Research Institute for Innovation in Education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem\, Israel\, and Research Fellow in the Department of Biblical Studies and Ancient Studies at the University of South Africa. \nShe will discuss  her new book “The Baghdadi Jews in India: Maintaining Communities\, Negotiating Identities and Creating Super-Diversity.”\n \nWednesday\, 4 November at 12:00PM EST \n“The Baghdadi Jews in India: Maintaining Communities\, Negotiating Identities and Creating Super-Diversity” explores the extraordinary differentiation of the Baghdadi Jewish community over time during their sojourn in India from the end of the eighteenth century until their dispersion to Indian diasporas in Israel and English-speaking countries throughout the world after India gained independence in 1947. \nChapters on schools\, institutions and culture present how Baghdadis in India managed to maintain their communities by negotiating multiple identities in a stratified and complex society. Several disciplinary perspectives are utilized to explore the super-diversity of the Baghdadis and the ways in which they successfully adapted to new situations during the Raj\, while retaining particular traditions and modifying and incorporating others. Providing a comprehensive overview of this community\, the contributions to the book show that the legacy of the Baghdadi Jews lives on for Indians today through landmarks and monuments in Mumbai\, Pune and Kolkata\, and for Jews\, through memories woven by members of the community residing in diverse diasporas. \nShalva Weil is Senior Researcher at the Research Institute for Innovation in Education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem\, Israel\, and Research Fellow in the Department of Biblical Studies and Ancient Studies at the University of South Africa. \nSponsorship opportunities available:\ninfo@americansephardi.org

SUMMARY:New Works Wednesdays with Alma Rachel Heckman
DESCRIPTION:New Works Wednesdays with Alma Rachel Heckman \nAlma Rachel Heckman\, Neufeld-Levin Chair of Holocaust Studies and Assistant Professor of History and Jewish Studies at the University of California\, Santa Cruz discusses her new book\, “The Sultan’s Communists: Moroccan Jews and the Politics of Belonging.” \nWednesday\, 28 October at 12:00PM EDT \nSign-up Now! \nThe Sultan’s Communists uncovers the history of Jewish radical involvement in Morocco’s national liberation project and examines how Moroccan Jews envisioned themselves participating as citizens in a newly-independent Morocco. Closely following the lives of five prominent Moroccan Jewish Communists (Léon René Sultan\, Edmond Amran El Maleh\, Abraham Serfaty\, Simon Lévy\, and Sion Assidon)\, Alma Rachel Heckman describes how Moroccan Communist Jews fit within the story of mass Jewish exodus from Morocco in the 1950s and ’60s\, and how they survived oppressive post-independence authoritarian rule under the Moroccan monarchy to ultimately become heroic emblems of state-sponsored Muslim-Jewish tolerance. \nThe figures at the center of Heckman’s narrative stood at the intersection of colonialism\, Arab nationalism\, and Zionism. Their stories unfolded in a country that\, upon independence from France and Spain in 1956\, allied itself with the United States (and\, more quietly\, Israel) during the Cold War\, while attempting to claim a place for itself within the fraught politics of the post-independence Arab world. The Sultan’s Communists contributes to the growing literature on Jews in the modern Middle East and provides a new history of twentieth-century Jewish Morocco. \nSponsorship opportunities available:\ninfo@americansephardi.org

SUMMARY:New Works Wednesdays with Reeva Spector Simon
DESCRIPTION:New Works Wednesdays with Reeva Spector Simon \nReeva Spector Simon discusses her new book “The Jews of the Middle East and North Africa: The Impact of World War II.” \nIncorporating published and archival material\, this volume fills an important gap in the history of the Jewish experience during World War II\, describing how the war affected Jews living along the southern rim of the Mediterranean and the Levant\, from Morocco to Iran. \n  \nWednesday\, 21 October at 12:00PM EDT \nSign-up Now! \nSurviving the Nazi slaughter did not mean that Jews living in the Middle East and North Africa were unaffected by the war: there was constant anti-Semitic propaganda and general economic deprivation; communities were bombed; and Jews suffered because of the anti-Semitic Vichy regulations that left them unemployed\, homeless\, and subject to forced labor and deportation to labor camps. Nevertheless\, they fought for the Allies and assisted the Americans and the British in the invasion of North Africa. These men and women were community leaders and average people who\, despite their dire economic circumstances\, worked with the refugees attempting to escape the Nazis via North Africa\, Turkey\, or Iran and connected with international aid agencies during and after the war. By 1945\, no Jewish community had been left untouched\, and many were financially decimated\, a situation that would have serious repercussions on the future of Jews in the region. \nReeva Spector Simon served as Associate Director of the Middle East Institute\, Columbia University\, and Professor of History at Yeshiva University. She is the author of Iraq Between the Two World Wars and co-editor of The Jews of the Middle East and North Africa in Modern Times. \nSponsorship opportunities available:\ninfo@americansephardi.org
