SUMMARY:Imagining the Jew in Early Modern England A Presentation on Two Sephardim: Rodrigo Lopez & Menasseh Ben Israel
DESCRIPTION:The ASF Institute of Jewish Experience presents: \nImagining the Jew in Early Modern England\nA Presentation on Two Sephardim:\nRodrigo Lopez & Menasseh Ben Israel \nBy Leonard Stein\nan ASF Broome & Allen Fellow and Connaught International Doctoral Scholar at the University of Toronto   \nWednesday 10 June at 12PM EDT \nSign-up Now!\n(Pay via PayPal by Credit or Debit Card) \nFor centuries after their expulsion in 1290\, Jews were largely imagined as stereotypes in England. However\, two famous Sephardim\, one a crypto-Jewish doctor\, the other a Portuguese-Dutch rabbi\, profoundly influenced the way England thought\, wrote\, and debated about the readmission of Jews. This presentation will discuss the tragic history of Rodrigo Lopez during the Elizabethan era and the auspicious history of Menasseh Ben Israel during the English Protectorate\, in order to understand how crypto-Jews\, conversos\, and Sephardim inspired a wide range of literary\, theological\, and political work on the status of the Jew.

In these sessions\, Barak will show the uniqueness of Yemenite song and prayers as they were distinct from other communities. SUMMARY:Values and Consequences in the Halakhic Process: A Sephardi Perspective
DESCRIPTION:The ASF Institute of Jewish Experience presents: \n  \nValues and Consequences in the Halakhic Process: A Sephardi Perspective\n(A Four Part Series) \nBy Bar-Ilan University Professor Zvi Zohar \nOn Mondays: 18\, 25 May & 1 June at 12PM EST\nSign-up Now! \n(Pay via PayPal by Credit or Debit Card)\n*Registration required for each date \nShould non-technical considerations\, such as the consequences of various halakhic options and values not previously associated with the halakhic case at hand\, have an influence on rabbinic decisions? Many Sephardic rabbis in modern times held that the answer was clearly affirmative\, and blazed the path of what may be characterized as “Teleological Decision Making in Halakha”. In this short series of we shall read together real-life sources reflecting that Sephardic halakhic path\, and discuss possible implications for Jewish life in today’s world. \n~Sponsorship Opportunities Available:Email or Call (212.294.8350) Yves Seban ~

SUMMARY:International Ladino Day: A Celebration of Story and Song
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate Ladino\, also known as Judeo-Spanish\, with acclaimed scholars and musicians. Hear Prof. Gloria Ascher\, who has taught courses in Ladino at Tufts University for 17 years; Prof. Dina Danon\, whose new book brings Izmir’s Ottoman Jewish community to life; two scenes from a New York Ladino play; a panel of Generation Y and Z Ladino enthusiasts; and musicians dear to our hearts\, The Elias Ladino Ensemble and Sarah Aroeste. \nSince 2013\, International Ladino Day celebrations have been held around the world. January 12th marks Manhattan’s Third Annual Ladino Day created by Prof. Jane Mushabac for the American Sephardi Federation at The Center for Jewish History. \nLadino is a bridge to many cultures. It is a variety of Spanish that has absorbed words and expressions from many languages\, most notably Hebrew\, Turkish\, Arabic\, Greek\, and French. The mother tongue of Jews in the Ottoman Empire for 500 years\, Ladino became the home language of Sephardim worldwide. While the number of Ladino speakers has sharply declined\, distinguished Ladino Day programs like this one celebrate and preserve a vibrant language and heritage for future generations. \n*Light refreshments will be served

SUMMARY:Eleanor Roosevelt & Refugees She Saved
DESCRIPTION:The Sousa Mendes Foundation and the American Sephardi Federation present the New York premiere of the documentary film\, Nobody Wants Us (2019\, dir. Laura Seltzer-Duny) on Sunday\, August 11\, 2019\, 2-4:30 p.m. at the Center for Jewish History\, 15 West 16th Street\, New York City. \nSYNOPSIS \nIn 1940\, a ship called the S.S. Quanza left the port of Lisbon carrying several hundred Jewish refugees — most of whom held Sousa Mendes visas — to freedom. But events went terribly wrong\, and the passengers became trapped on the ship because no country would take them in. Nobody Wants Us tells the gripping true story of how Eleanor Roosevelt herself stepped in to save the passengers on board because of her moral conviction that they were not “undesirables” (as the US State Department labeled them) but rather were “future patriotic Americans.” This is an episode in American history that everyone needs to know. \nPROGRAM \nThe film\, which is 35 minutes in length\, will be introduced by the filmmaker Laura Seltzer-Duny and followed by a panel discussion moderated by Michael Dobbs of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum\, author of The Unwanted. Other participants will include: \nBlanche Wiesen Cook\, the leading world expert on Eleanor Roosevelt and the author of her three-volume biography. \nAnnette Lachmann\, who was a passenger on the Quanza in 1940. \nKathleen Rand\, whose father Wolf Rand was the passenger who successfully filed suit against the shipping company\, forcing the vessel to remain in port until the conflict was resolved. \nStephen Morewitz\, the leading world expert on the Quanza story\, whose grandparents’ Newport News\, Virginia law firm of Morewitz & Morewitz was hired by Wolf Rand and successfully litigated the case. \nA wine and cheese reception will follow. \nSignificance of the story: \nAccording to Michael Dobbs\, “The Quanza incident is a timely reminder that individuals make a difference. Without visas supplied by the Portuguese diplomat Aristides de Sousa Mendes\, many of the Jewish passengers on board the Quanza might well have been stranded in Nazi-occupied Europe. Without the legal brilliance of a maritime lawyer named Jacob Morewitz\, the ship would have been obliged to sail back to Europe. Without the intervention of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt\, the passengers would not have been permitted to land. It took three people\, from entirely different backgrounds\, to save dozens of lives that might otherwise have been lost.” \nTICKET INFORMATION \nGeneral admission: $20 \nSponsor ticket: $120 includes VIP luncheon at 12:30 p.m. $100 of this ticket price is tax-deductible. Money raised will help bring the film and educational materials into schools throughout the United States.

SUMMARY:First Person: Matti Friedman
DESCRIPTION:Matti Friedman’s new book\, “Spies of No Country: Secret Lives at the Birth of Israel” tells the unknown story of four of Israel’s first spies. \nRecruited by a rag-tag outfit called the Arab Section before the 1948 War of Independence\, they assumed Arab identities to gather intelligence and carry out sabotage and assassinations. At the height of the war the spies posed as refugees fleeing the fighting\, reached Beirut\, and set up what became Israel’s first foreign intelligence station. “Spies” not only tells a breathtaking and true espionage story\, it also explores a different story about how the state was founded and raises many questions that are relevant today. \nIn a wide-ranging First Person conversation\, Matti Friedman speaks with author Lucette Lagnado (“The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit”) about his journalism career\, researching and writing his new book\, and what Spies of No Country reveals about Israel in the 20th and 21st centuries. \nTicket Info: $15 general; $12 seniors\, $10 members and students at friedman.bpt.me or 800-838-3006 \n  \nAbout the Speakers \nMatti Friedman has reported from Israel\, Lebanon\, Morocco\, Moscow\, the Caucasus\, and Washington\, DC. SUMMARY:Rachid Halihal and His Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Musical Journey in the Arabic Music: From Moroccan to Andalusian Music. Many surprises! \nAs a world-class musician\, Rachid Halihal brings to the community the true character and spirit of musics from the classical Egyptian repertoire which is much loved throughout the Middle East; from the Fertile Crescent; from diverse regions of Morocco and North Africa; and also the mesmerizing music of the Arabian Gulf. \nRachid Halilal — Journey in Judeo-Arabic Songs: from Andalusia to Moroccan Classics\nFebruary 26th at 8 pm. \nPart of the American Sephardi Music Festival. \nCenter for Jewish History\n15 w 16th St\nNew York NY 10011 \n  \nBIO \nAs a child\, growing up in Fez\, Morocco\, Rachid played the nei and sang\, imitating the famous singers of the time. At age fourteen he entered “Dar Aadyil” the Conservatory of Music in Fez. At first he studied Western classical and Andalus music on piano and violin. He soon expanded to include a variety of other instruments in order to better express his native music. In addition to his voice\, which is best featured in the Andalus style\, his strongest instruments are the oud (similar to a lute without frets) and the violin\, which he plays in both the classical manner and upright resting on the knee for Moroccan folkloric music. \nUntil 1986\, Rachid played in an Andalus orchestra in Fez\, and at various occasions throughout Casablanca. Then\, over a span of fourteen years\, he presented his music to a more varied audience. This included an extended stay in the Ivory Coast; one year in Sweden; one year in Finland\, where he and his seven piece band played at the Helsinki International Music Festival sharing the bill with Cheb Khaled; and in the coastal city of Agadir\, Morocco\, Rachid fully managed a night club\, its musicians\, and folkloric troupe for seven of those years\, playing his music every night for the clubs primarily touristic and Arabian clientele. On his violin\, he accompanied many of Morocco’s well known singers who toured to Agadir. On many occasions he played with Mohammed Abdo\, one of the Arabian Gulf’s most loved singers. During two years\, Rachid was invited numerous times to the Arabian Gulf as a singer and oud player in his own right. \nIn Summer 2004 Rachid toured the USA with The Chicago Classical Oriental Ensemble playing Moroccan Andalus music with Abdelfattah Bennis\, including Genesis at the Crossroads Festival in Chicago. He was presented at Columbia University in concert with visiting Israeli singer\, Michel Cohen\, with Moroccan singer Pinhas in New York and Miami\, as well as other ethnic concerts and events throughout New York City. In 2003-4\, Rachid was presented with his band at Denver’s Global Groove World Music Festival\, with Nawang Kechong in Aspen\, in two separate Mid-East Dance concerts at the Boulder Theater\, Colorado\, with Souhail Kaspar in Denver\, Boulder\, Portland\, and Los Angeles. Rachid also played at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for the inaugural King Tut exhibit in the US on June 15\, 05. In Summer of ’05 Rachid toured the USA and Canada with Rachid Taha (Algerian/French) Rai-rock band. \nThe music which Rachid Halihal presents is soulful and poetic as well as very danceable to the point that not an empty spot can be found on the dance floor wherever he plays. \nA few bars into a song and you feel immediately that this is an extraordinary musician. Even at an early age\, Rachid Halihal received serious respect from his extended family as if he were an elder musician. \nRelocating from Morocco to the United States in the new millennium\, he makes his home base both in Denver and New York City. Rachid Halihal brings forth the true character of musics from diverse regions of Morocco\, the Andalus\, Sufi spiritual tradition; the full classical and pop Egyptian repertoire; and also the mesmerizing music of the Arabian Gulf.\nRachid was presented at MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) in Manhattan\, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art\, as well as  Columbia\, Yale\, and Stanford Universities\, U of Northern Florida\, and CU Boulder\, CO; and one tour with the late Rachid Taha. \nHe had the honor of directing ASWAT\, Arabic music orchestra of San Francisco comprised of American and Arab-American musicians. He taught them new songs to play with him at the Tutankhamun exhibit at De Young Museum\, and conducted ASWAT in a concert at College of San Mateo Theater. Rachid has led his previous band\, Layali el Andalus playing in Revels\, at the Kennedy Center\, and recently at Revels in CA. \nRachid teaches at various ethnic music & dance workshops throughout mainland US and Hawaii\, teaching melody as well as those elusive North African rhythms.

SUMMARY:Learning Ladino
DESCRIPTION:Ladino is a dialect of Spanish and has many regional variations of its own. This mini-course will introduce the nuances of Ladino\, and we will conduct a comparative study of both spoken and written Spanish and Ladino\, with Latin and Hebrew characters. \nSix Part Course. 18 February – 25 March\nEach Monday\, 6:00-8:00 PM \nMonday\, 18 February: Introduction to Ladino: pronunciation\, spelling\, variations.\nMonday\, 25 February: American Ladino\nMonday\, 4 March: Turkish Ladino\nMonday\, 11 March: Greece: Salonician and Monastirli Ladino\nMonday\, 18 March: Comparative Liturgy: Psalms\, Piyyutim\, and Agada\nMonday\, 25 March: Student reflections \nDr. Joe Halio was raised in a Sephardic family of immigrants from Salonica and Turkey. His grandfather\, Albert Torres\, publisher of La Vara\, and his father\, Hank Halio\, author of Ladino Reveries\, taught him to speak Ladino. Years spent at the Sephardic Home for the Aged\, the Kastoriali Kehila in Brooklyn\, and the Sephardic Jewish Center of Forest Hills\, as well as his travels to Turkey\, Greece\, and Israel\, gave him additional perspective on the Ladino language. His extensive contact with native speakers and scholars of Ladino and Sephardic culture\, as well as his large library of Ladino literature of all kinds\, has provided him with rich opportunities to study and teach the native language and history of the Sephardim. \nKnowledge of modern spoken Spanish is preferable. Texts will include material written in the USA\, the Balkans\, and Turkey\, as well as audio and visual references. Because spoken language cannot be separated from culture in which it exists\, knowledge of Sephardic history and culture is recommended\, but not essential. Six weekly 2 hour sessions will cover an introduction to Ladino pronunciation\, reading and writing Ladino\, and regional variations. Cultural material may include historical documents\, liturgy\, folklore\, and popular sources. \nObjective \nTo clarify the differences between modern Spanish and Ladino dialects\, to facilitate research and use of the Ladino dialect\, and to promote enjoyment of Ladino and Sephardic culture and history. \nScope \nWe will speak\, read\, and write Ladino in various contexts\, both popular and scholarly. \nTexts \nHandouts\, websites\, references to available library and archival material. \nRequirements \nBasic understanding of spoken Spanish and Sephardic history and culture preferred. \nApproach to learning \nClass participation\, individual research\, and presentations as desired. \nDecorum \nNo cellphones\, computers\, recording\, etc.\, unless used in presentations\, with permission of the instructor. \nClasses will take place @The ASFs Sephardi Scholars Center

SUMMARY:International Ladino Day
DESCRIPTION:A Festival to celebrate Ladino\, the remarkable language also known as Judeo-Spanish. \nCelebrate Ladino in the company of highly acclaimed musicians and writers. Hear clarinetist Danny Elias; author Jane Mushabac’s story\, Seven Songs; composer Avi Amon’s musical fantasy\, Salonika; scholar Bryan Kirschen speaking on Ladino’s rich culture; Rabbi Nissim Elnecavé on wisdom tales; and the Alhambra Ensemble’s Songs of Courtship\, Love\, and Holidays with oud\, violin\, shawm\, dumbek and voices. \nLight refreshments will be served. \nSince 2013\, when Israel’s 5th President Yitzhak Navon endorsed Zelda Ovadia’s idea of International Ladino Day\, celebrations have been held in Jerusalem\, Seattle\, Istanbul\, Madrid\, Dallas\, Forest Hills\, Boston\, and other cities. February 10th marks the Second Annual International Ladino Day at the Center for Jewish History. \nLadino is a bridge to many cultures; it’s a Spanish language that includes words in Hebrew\, Turkish\, Arabic\, and more. The mother tongue of Jews in the Ottoman Empire for 500 years\, Ladino was the home language of Sephardim worldwide in the early 20th century. \nAlthough today Ladino is only spoken by a small fraction of Sephardim\, the interest in the language and its culture is experiencing a resurgence through distinguished university programs\, publications\, concerts\, and events of many kinds. \nThe February 10th event is presented by the American Sephardi Federation\, the American Jewish Historical Society\, the Sephardic Jewish Brotherhood of America\, and Binghamton University Department of Judaic Studies and the Charles and Rae Grabel Memorial Fund for Judaic Studies. We are also grateful to the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. \n

Some Jewish communities in Africa are amongst the oldest in the world\, dating back more than 2\,700 years (Morocco\, Egypt\, Libya\, Tunisia\, and Algeria). Today\, Jews and Judaism in Africa show an ethnic and religious diversity and richness almost unparalleled on any other continent. \nCONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS\nA circle of emerging African leaders and researchers will analyze a broad spectrum of issues pertaining to the history and contemporary situation of Jewish Africa\, including the role of Jews and the need of Jewish voices in African civil society\, the development of Jewish space\, perspectives on old and new African Jewish identities\, and encounters between Jews and non-Jews in contemporary Africa. \nTOPICS TO BE DISCUSSED\nJewish heritage in Morocco\, Tunisia\, Egypt\, Ethiopia\, Cape Verde\, Ouganda\, and South Africa; Black African Judaism; Future for Judaism in Africa; and preserving the memory and heritage of African Judaism in the 21st Century via Digital Heritage Mappings Diarna Geo-Museum and Atlas of Jewish History initiative. \nThe central idea is to approach these topics from the point of view of Jewish African leaders. In doing so\, the conference seeks to provide a platform and create a meaningful network of researchers and Jewish African leaders. \nDescription of ASF-Mimouna Partnership\nThe ASF is partnered with Association Mimouna to celebrate Judeo-Moroccan history\, traditions\, and culture\, as well as the Moroccan culture of co-existence. Since 2014\, The ASF and Association Mimouna have done a series of major events in New York City\, including the Moroccan-Jewish Caravan\, From Casablanca to New York: A Night of Moroccan Culture\, the 20th and 21st Anniversary Editions of the NY Sephardic Jewish Film Festival\, and an event with the Muslim World League honoring the heroism of Muslims who protected Jewish communities and/or saved Jewish refugees during the Holocaust. These events have been both well-attended (indeed\, the Opening Night of the 20th NYSJFF honoring Mr. André Azoulay\, Counsellor to the King of Morocco\, and our other events at The Center for Jewish History were all sold out) and drew the attention of leading publications\, such as Tablet Magazine\, CS Monitor\, and the Times of Israel. Our work together preserving Jewish historical sites in Morocco\, via a mutual partner\, the Diarna Geo-Museum of North African and Middle Eastern Jewish Life\, has also been featured in The New York Times.
