SUMMARY:Maktuv*: An Evening of Islamic and Jewish Calligraphy
DESCRIPTION:Join MALA and ASF for an interactive workshop led by experiential educator and artist Ruben Shimonov! \nWe will explore the significance of Arabic in Islam and Hebrew in Judaism\, as well as the close relationship between both Semitic languages. It’ll be a space to share our personal connections with the holy languages of our respective faiths and to engage with these two languages through a hands-on calligraphy workshop! \nNo background in Arabic or Hebrew calligraphy necessary. Refreshments will be served. \n*As cognates\, Maktoob and K’tuv mean “written” in Arabic and Hebrew respectively. \n  \nABOUT OUR WORKSHOP LEADER \nBorn in Uzbekistan\, Ruben Shimonov belongs to the native Persian-speaking Jewish population of Central Asia. This community—the Bukharian Jews—have lived alongside their Muslim neighbors for 1300 years\, engaging in cultural and intellectual commerce. \nGiven his background\, Ruben possesses a strong passion for Muslim-Jewish community building. He has brought this interest to his academic\, professional and community leadership work\, including his involvement with the American Sephardic Federation (ASF) where he currently serves as the Vice-President of Education and Community Engagement on the Young Leadership board. Ruben is also an ASF 2018 Broome & Allen Fellow. \nHis interest in Muslim-Jewish dialogue has also informed his artistic work\, inspiring him to create multilingual calligraphy that juxtaposes and weaves together Hebrew\, Arabic\, and Persian. He currently studies at New York University\, pursuing a dual Master’s in Public Administration and Judaic Studies.

SUMMARY:Passport to Jewish History
DESCRIPTION:Join researchers from Diarna: Geo-Museum of North African and Middle Eastern Jewish Life for a three-part passport series. Each session explores Jewish historical sites and stories. \n19 July — A Pilgrimage to Morocco’s Jewish Saints \n25 July — Journey to Egypt: Results of a Recent Research Expedition (featuring Diarna’s lead photographer\, Josh Shamsi) \n8 August — Beyond Tunis: A Comprehensive Mission to Tunisia (featuring Diarna photographer Chrystie Sherman) \nOver a million Jews once lived in the Middle East and North Africa\, spanning from synagogues on the edge of the Sahara Desert in Morocco to abandoned Jewish fortresses in Saudi Arabia and the traditional shrines of Biblical personalities in the Kurdish regions of Iraq and Iran. The profound Jewish imprint on the region could be experienced in major cities and diffuse villages. \nNow\, decades since communities have disbanded\, synagogues\, schools\, cemeteries\, and other structures left behind are suffering from natural decay or being deliberately targeted for destruction\, while political strife has stymied visiting\, no less preserving\, thousands of sites. In recent years the Iranian regime has threatened to destroy the purported shrine of Esther and Mordechai at Hamadan; the storied Eliyahu HaNabi Synagogue in the Jobar neighborhood of Damascus was reduced to rubble (a consequence of being caught in the crossfire of the Syrian Civil War); and ISIS exploded the traditional tomb of Jonah\, which had been located within one of Mosul’s oldest mosques. \nAbout Diarna \nDiarna: The Geo-Museum of North African and Middle Eastern Jewish Life —an independent initiative of Digital Heritage Mapping\, a spacial humanities non-profit organization— is working to digitally preserve the physical remnants of Jewish history throughout the region. We are in a race against time to capture site data and record place-based oral histories. Diarna pioneers the synthesis of digital mapping technology\, traditional scholarship\, and field research\, as well as a trove of multimedia documentation. All of these combine to lend a virtual presence and guarantee untrammeled access to Jewish historical sites lest they be forgotten or erased.

SUMMARY:The Teimani Experience Opening
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the opening of an interactive\, multi-sensory exploration of the history and culture of Yemenite Jews. \nThe Teimani Experience immerses visitors in the sights\, sounds\, and even smells of the Yemenite Jewish culture\, including the actual room (complete with ostrich eggs and rose water) recreated in Israel by Yemenite women from Sana’a who continued the tradition of making the birth mother the center of attention after both she and her newborn survived for thirty days. Aspects of Yemenite daily life are represented through an original painting of a representative Jewish home\, artifacts pertaining to different Jewish occupations (including jewelry from remote areas of Yemen as well as worm-worn handwritten Biblical texts in Arabic\, Hebrew\, and Aramaic and a rare printed Maimonides text dating back approximately 100 years)\, correspondence between Yemen and the Land of Israel\, pictures taken in the last 30 years of Jews and Jewish sites (synagogues\, shrines\, and other structures) in Yemen\, and recordings of Torah reading and women’s songs. \nThe exhibit is part of The Yemenite Conference (www.asfyemenconference.org) 3-5 June at The Center for Jewish History and United Nations

SUMMARY:Queen Esther's dilemma - The Musical
DESCRIPTION:The Queen Esther’s Dilemma\, a musical by Samuel J. Bernstein\, is inspired by the Biblical Book of Esther. This original musical play blends humor with anguish\, tragedy with triumph\, while exploring Jewish identity in all its complexities. \nFour exceptional performances: \nMarch 1st at 2 pm (special Purim performance)\nMarch 4th at 8 pm (opening night)\nMarch 13th at 3 pm\nMarch 18th at 6 pm \nPerformances will take place at the Center for Jewish located at 15 West 16th Street\, New York NY 10011. \nTickets are $20 and $30. \nIn The Queens Dilemma\, inspired by the Biblical Book of Esther\, a contemporary Purim Party is interwoven with the principal features of the traditional Purim story. The party includes Purim games; dancing; singing; and\, of course\, the drinking of many cups of wine. The Biblical narrative recounts the efforts of Haman\, an evil Persian\, to annihilate the Jews\, and the actions of Queen Esther; Mordechai\, her cousin; and King Ahasuerus to counteract the machinations of Haman. In this theatrical rendering\, Esther faces various difficult ethical problems as she strives to be a woman loyal to the interests of the Jews\, as interpreted by Mordechai\, and yet a person with strong pacifistic inclinations. \nFull production with a cast of 8 actors and orchestra.

SUMMARY:The 21st New York Sephardic Jewish Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 21st-anniversary edition of the NY Sephardic Jewish Film Festival features compelling stories and evocative documentaries about Iraqi\, Syrian\, Mexican\, Egyptian\, Israeli\, French\, Tunisian\, Ethiopian\, and Greek communities \nThe American Sephardi Federation’s NY Sephardic Jewish Film Festival showcases contemporary voices steeped in the history\, traditions\, and rich mosaic culture of Greater Sephardic communities. The ten-day Festival features premiere film screenings\, intriguing stories\, evocative documentaries\, Q&As with filmmakers\, as well as special honorees and guests. The Pomegranate Awards Ceremony on Opening Night celebrates Sephardi excellence in the arts. Past recipients include Senior Counselor to the King of Morocco André Azoulay\, French-Algerian recording legend Enrico Macias\, Kuwaiti star and human rights activist Ema Shah\, and Morocco-Israeli poet Erez Bitton. \nEach night of the Festival is a different themed program honoring the rich and diverse communities ASF represents. \n“For the NYSJFF 21st Edition\, we are proud to present poignant and powerful programs\, including a number of New York premieres\,” said Sara Nodjoumi\, Artistic Director of the New York Sephardic Jewish Film Festival. “From Stars\, Konrad Wolf’s classic\, cinematic gem on the Greek Holocaust experience\, to Cecile Peck’s Brave Miss World about a Moroccan-Israeli beauty contestant’s struggle against sexual violence\, these are universal stories that speak to the issues of our time (discrimination\, persecution\, immigration\, resistance) and all time\,” Nodjoumi said. \nNYSJFF Artistic Director Sara Nodjoumi produced The Iran Job\, and is a programming alumna of the Tribeca Film Festival\, where her latest film\, When God Sleeps\, premiered earlier this year.  \nDavid Serero\, the producer of the NYSJFF’s star-studded 20th edition\, returns to produce this year’s Festival. A Moroccan-French opera singer and actor with many credits to his name\, Serero previously created and starred in ASF’s successful theatrical season (Merchant of Venice\, Othello\, and Nabucco)\, and will star in April and June 2018 as Cyrano of Bergerac and Don Giovanni at the ASF. \nAll films and events are taking place at the Center for Jewish History located at 15 West 16th Street. Sitt\nDocumentary Feature\, 90 min\, USA\, 2014\, English \nFrom Executive Producer\, Joseph J. Sitt\, the sixth installment of his multi-part series on the Syrian Sephardi community\, is the fascinating story of life in Syria for the Jews who remained there after the massive exodus to the US and other countries in the early 1900s. Weaving together stories of pogroms and fires in Aleppo and Damascus in 1947 and 1948\, of repression and heroic escapes as Jews in Syria\, Lebanon\, and Egypt fled persecution\, the mysterious Aleppo Codex (part of which was smuggled to safety in Israel)\, the courageous Rabbi Abraham Kalmanowitz who helped Syrian boys escape to New York\, and the Jewish spy\, Elie Cohen\, who helped his brothers in Israel win the Six Day War before his capture and execution\, this is an incredible film about one of the Jewish People’s oldest and most illustrious communities. \n  \nWednesday\, March 7th at 7:00 pm: Anti-Semitism in France \nWHY DO THEY HATE US?\nDirected by Alexandre Amiel\nDocumentary Feature\, 81 min\, France\, 2016\, French with English subtitles\nNY Premiere\nFollowed by a Panel discussion \nIn 2015\, French and Belgian-born ISIS terrorists massacred civilians in Paris\, including at the office of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and the famed Bataclan Theatre. Motivated by these attacks—the deadliest in France since World War II—and his son’s questions about the murderers\, Alexandre Amiel\, a French-Moroccan Sephardi filmmaker and veteran reporter\, produced a trilogy of documentaries exploring hatred from the perspectives of its primary victims in French society by profiling three representatives: himself\, Amelle Chahbi (a comedienne of Moroccan descent)\, and Lucien Jean-Baptiste (an actor and director who was born in the Caribbean). This NY premiere of the episode relating to anti-Semitism is a must-see in this age of rising religious and racial hatreds\, nationalist chauvinism\, and violence. \n  \nThursday\, March 8th at 7 pm: Undying Romance in Mexico – Sephardi-style \nNORA’S WILL\nDirected by Mariana Chenillo\nNarrative Feature\, 90 min\, Mexico\, 2010\, Spanish with English subtitles\nFollowed by a Mexican After-Party \nWhen his ex-wife Nora dies right before Passover\, José is forced to stay with her body until she can be properly put to rest. He soon realizes he is part of Nora’s plan to bring her family back together for one last Passover feast\, leading José to rediscover their undying love for each other. A comedy like no other\, and directed by Mariana Chenillo\, the first female director to win Mexico’s Best Picture Award. \n  \nSaturday\, March 10th at 8:30 pm: Classic Movie Night: Greek Sephardim in the Holocaust \nSTARS\nDirected by Konrad Wolf\nNarrative Feature\, 88 min\, East Germany / Bulgaria\, 1959\, German\, Bulgarian\, Yiddish\, and Ladino with English subtitles \nA classic film from one of Germany’s greatest filmmakers\, Stars won The Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1959. The film exquisitely tells the story of a Nazi officer who falls in love with a Greek-Sephardi Jewish girl while escorting Jewish prisoners through Bulgaria to a concentration camp. \n  \nSunday\, March 11th at 1:30pm: The Promised Land: Ma’abarot Memories \nTHE ANCESTRAL SIN\nDirected by David Deri\nDocumentary Feature\, 109 min\, Israel\, 2017\, Hebrew and Darija (Moroccan Arabic) with English subtitles\nNY Premiere \nIn the first two decades after the re-establishment of Israel\, the director’s family\, originally from Morocco\, were part of the wave of refugees from Greater Sephardi communities who came to the fledgling Jewish State. As other immigrants coming to this Promised but poor land\, Deri’s family were taken to a “development town\,” Yeruham in the Negev Desert\, as part of a population disbursement policy that pushed Sephardim to the country’s periphery. This chilling documentary shares personal stories that reveal the price immigrant-families have paid and the price still being paid by Israeli society for the discriminatory policies of its Ashkenazi-dominated early years. \nROCK IN THE RED ZONE (3:30 pm)\nDirected by Laura Bialis\nDocumentary Feature\, 92 min\, Israel\, 2014\, English & Hebrew with English subtitles \nFear and danger are never far for residents of the development town\, Sderot\, where missiles rain down on civilians routinely from Hamas and other Islamist forces in the nearby Gaza Strip. Despite the almost daily trauma\, a community of young artists—Greater Sephardi Jews of mainly Moroccan\, Kurdish\, and Persian descent—have found an artistic outlet for their anger and hope\, creating world-infused music every single day. \n  \nSunday\, March 11th at 5:30 pm: The Egyptian Experience \nSTARTING OVER AGAIN\nDirected by Ruggero Gabbai\nDocumentary Feature\, 64 min\, USA\, 2015\, English\nNY Premiere \nFilmed in Paris\, Milan\, New York\, London\, Washington\, Sydney\, Tel Aviv\, and Jerusalem\, this personal documentary is the story of Egyptian Jews during 1948-1956. Narrated by twenty witnesses\, this NY premiere deftly weaves historical events and archival footage\, a powerful film about resilience and reinvention. \nTHE BAND’S VISIT (7:00 pm)\nDirected by Eran Kolirin\nNarrative Feature\, 87 min\, Israel\, 2007\, Arabic & Hebrew with English subtitles\nWhen a band of eight Egyptian musicians arrives by mistake in a small town in Israel’s Negev Desert\, they stop at a restaurant owned by Dina (the late and great ASF Pomegranate Award Honoree\, Ronit Elkabetz)\, who offers them lodging. Now an award-winning Broadway musical\, this classic is both a clever\, subtle slice-of-life comedy\, and poignant cross-cultural exploration. \n  \nMonday\, March 12th at 7:00 pm: Young Professionals Night – A Moroccan Israeli’s #MeToo \nBRAVE MISS WORLD\nDirected by Cecilia Peck\nDocumentary Feature\, 92 min\, USA\, 2013\, English\, Hebrew & Italian with English subtitles\nQ&A with Filmmaker \nWeeks before winning the 1998 Miss World pageant\, Moroccan-Israeli teen Linor Abargil was held captive and raped by her travel agent while heading home from an Italian modeling assignment. Ten years later\, she resolved to confront her past and reach out to other rape survivors. An inspiring story about courage and the universal struggle to stop rampant sexual violence against women. \n  \nTuesday\, March 13th: SEPHARDI SHORTS PROGRAM \nTHE PIRATE CAPTAIN TOLEDANO\nDirected by Arnon Shorr\nShort Narrative\, 10 min\, USA\, 2017\, English\nNY Premiere \nOn a 16th century ship\, a Jewish stowaway who fled the Inquisition wants to become a pirate to avenge Spanish persecution. The captain must decide whether to make him a pirate… or make him walk the plank. An imaginary take on the real history of the Sephardi pirates of the Caribbean. \nSARA LEVY COHEN\nDirected by Zohar Melinik\nDocumentary Short\, 13 min\, Israel\, Ladino & Hebrew with English subtitles\nNY Premiere \nA 96-year old woman has lived in the same apartment for 70 years in Jerusalem. Before immigrating to Israel from Turkey\, she sang traditional songs in Ladino\, her mother-tongue. While Ladino fades away\, it also reveals a story of cultural identity in constant motion. \n116 CAMERAS\nDirected by Davina Pardo\nDocumentary Short\, 16 min\, USA\, English \nAs the Holocaust survivor community ages\, the USC Shoah Foundation has embarked on an ambitious new project to transform survivors into 3D digital projections that will interact with generations to come. SUMMARY:At the Intersection of Sephardic\, Mizrahi\, and Russian-Speaking
DESCRIPTION:At the Intersection of Sephardic\, Mizrahi\, and Russian-Speaking: A Three-Part Learning and Cultural Series on the Greater Sephardic Communities of the Former Soviet Union \nAmerican Sephardi Federation’s Young Sephardi Scholars Series\, in partnership with COJECO BluePrint Fellowship\, is excited to host a three-part learning and cultural series about the Russian-speaking Jewish (RSJ) communities of the Greater Sephardic world. The cultures and histories of Bukharian\, Georgian\, and Kavkazi (Mountain) Jews are situated at the fascinating\, yet lesser known\, intersection of RSJ\, Sephardic\, and Mizrahi life. Led by Ruben Shimonov\, this interactive multimedia learning series will provide a unique opportunity to explore the rich and multilayered stories of the three communities. \nThe dates of the series are: 2/26 (Kavkazi Jews)\, 3/20 (Bukharian Jews)\, and 4/24 (Georgian Jews).  \nAll sessions will begin at 7 pm in ASF’s Sephardi Scholars Center at the Center for Jewish History (15 West 16th Street\, NY\, NY 10011).  \nLight dinner reflecting the cuisine of Bukharian\, Georgian\, and Kavkazi Jews will be served.  \nRegistration: $10 per session or $20 for all 3. \n  \nRuben Shimonov\, 2018 American Sephardi Federation Broome & Allen Fellow\, was born in Uzbekistan and grew up in the vibrant Greek and Turkish Sephardic community of Seattle. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in International Relations\, Near Eastern Studies\, and Jewish Studies from the University of Washington. As a Bukharian Jew—whose own multilayered identity lies at the intersection of Mizrahi\, Sephardic\, and RSJ—Ruben roots his work as an educator\, social innovator\, and community builder in a deep passion for the diverse cultural mosaic of the Jewish people. This has informed his active leadership and community organizing endeavors within organizations such as the American Sephardi Federation (where he is the Young Leadership Board’s VP of Education and Community Engagement)\, JDC Entwine\, Moishe House\, and OneTable. He has also brought this passion to his work at Queens College Hillel for the past four years—most recently as Director of Cross-Community Engagement and Education—where he had the unique role of engaging\, empowering\, and creating meaningful Jewish experiences for Sephardic and Mizrahi students. Ruben is currently pursuing Master’s degrees in both Public Administration/Nonprofit Management and Judaic Studies at New York University. Ruben was recently named a COJECO Blueprint Fellow and is working on community projects that highlight the intersectional identities of Russian-speaking Greater Sephardic Jews. He is also the founder of the Sephardic-Mizrahi LGBTQ Shabbat Dinner Series and annual retreats\, which provide a one-of-a-kind platform for LGBTQ Jews from Sephardic and Mizrahi backgrounds to build a vibrant and supportive community. \n— \nThis learning series is created as part of COJECO BluePrint Fellowship supported by COJECO and Genesis Philanthropy Group.

SUMMARY:Emma Lazarus' Sephardic Return
DESCRIPTION:Emma Lazarus\, the nineteenth-century Sephardic American poet and translator\, expressed an identity particularly engaged with the Jewish legacy of medieval Spain. \nThis lecture by 2018 American Sephardi Federation Broome & Allen Fellow Leonard Stein explores Lazarus’s proto-Zionism\, sexuality\, and advocacy for a compassionate American society\, positions informed by her readings of al-Andalus and the Spanish Inquisition as interpellated by contemporary German Jewish scholars. Comparing her poetry with these historical sources reveals how her famous work against anti-Semitism and nationalist chauvinism stem from a commitment to her ancestral past. \nLeonard Stein is a Connaught International Doctoral Scholar for the Centre for Comparative Literature in a collaborative program with the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies at the University of Toronto. His research compares medieval Jewish-Iberian identity with modern literature from the Sephardic diaspora. He currently serves as the President pro tem and program chair for the Society for Crypto Judaic Studies and editor for the University of Toronto Journal of Jewish Thought. His newest publications include “Jubanidad and the Literary Transmission of Cuban Crypto-Judaism” for the forthcoming edited volume\, Caribbean-Jewish Crossings: Atlantic Literature and Theory (University of Virginia Press)\, and “The New Literature of Hip Hop Music” for the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Hip Hop Music Studies.
