One Night Only! \nThe American Sephardi Federation and Caminos De Sefarad: Red de Juderías de España present a pop-up photographic exhibition on Spain’s formerly Jewish Quarters. \nThe evening will also feature a presentation by Doreen Alhadeff\, a member of Seattle’s Sephardic community\, who was one of the first to be recognized under Spain’s Sephardic citizenship law\, as well as a Spanish kosher wine tasting. This event is the first part of a two-day program at The Center for Jewish History and Instituto Cervantes\, where there will be a Sephardic music concert by Lara Bellow (“Juderias” ) on Monday night. \nAbout Descubre Sefarad \nFor the past 20 years\, several Spanish cities have been working to uncover and promote the architectural\, historical\, environmental\, and cultural heritage of Spain’s formerly Sephardic communities. The Red de Juderias (Spanish Network of Jewish Quarters) is an organization that has put these cities together to further the defense of historical heritage\, promotion of the Jewish legacy\, and further knowledge and mutual respect amongst all peoples\, cultures\, and traditions. This exhibition depicts historical Jewish Quarters that have been preserved and some which are newly recovered.

SUMMARY:The Teimani Experience Opening
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the opening of an interactive\, multi-sensory exploration of the history and culture of Yemenite Jews. \nThe Teimani Experience immerses visitors in the sights\, sounds\, and even smells of the Yemenite Jewish culture\, including the actual room (complete with ostrich eggs and rose water) recreated in Israel by Yemenite women from Sana’a who continued the tradition of making the birth mother the center of attention after both she and her newborn survived for thirty days. Aspects of Yemenite daily life are represented through an original painting of a representative Jewish home\, artifacts pertaining to different Jewish occupations (including jewelry from remote areas of Yemen as well as worm-worn handwritten Biblical texts in Arabic\, Hebrew\, and Aramaic and a rare printed Maimonides text dating back approximately 100 years)\, correspondence between Yemen and the Land of Israel\, pictures taken in the last 30 years of Jews and Jewish sites (synagogues\, shrines\, and other structures) in Yemen\, and recordings of Torah reading and women’s songs. \nThe exhibit is part of The Yemenite Conference (www.asfyemenconference.org) 3-5 June at The Center for Jewish History and United Nations

DESCRIPTION:The Queen Esther’s Dilemma\, a musical by Samuel J. Bernstein\, is inspired by the Biblical Book of Esther. This original musical play blends humor with anguish\, tragedy with triumph\, while exploring Jewish identity in all its complexities. \nFour exceptional performances: \nMarch 1st at 2 pm (special Purim performance)\nMarch 4th at 8 pm (opening night)\nMarch 13th at 3 pm\nMarch 18th at 6 pm \nPerformances will take place at the Center for Jewish located at 15 West 16th Street\, New York NY 10011. \nTickets are $20 and $30. \nIn The Queens Dilemma\, inspired by the Biblical Book of Esther\, a contemporary Purim Party is interwoven with the principal features of the traditional Purim story. The party includes Purim games; dancing; singing; and\, of course\, the drinking of many cups of wine. The Biblical narrative recounts the efforts of Haman\, an evil Persian\, to annihilate the Jews\, and the actions of Queen Esther; Mordechai\, her cousin; and King Ahasuerus to counteract the machinations of Haman. In this theatrical rendering\, Esther faces various difficult ethical problems as she strives to be a woman loyal to the interests of the Jews\, as interpreted by Mordechai\, and yet a person with strong pacifistic inclinations. \nFull production with a cast of 8 actors and orchestra.

The cultures and histories of Bukharian\, Georgian\, and Kavkazi (Mountain) Jews are situated at the fascinating\, yet lesser known\, intersection of RSJ\, Sephardic\, and Mizrahi life. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in International Relations\, Near Eastern Studies\, and Jewish Studies from the University of Washington. As a Bukharian Jew—whose own multilayered identity lies at the intersection of Mizrahi\, Sephardic\, and RSJ—Ruben roots his work as an educator\, social innovator\, and community builder in a deep passion for the diverse cultural mosaic of the Jewish people. This has informed his active leadership and community organizing endeavors within organizations such as the American Sephardi Federation (where he is the Young Leadership Board’s VP of Education and Community Engagement)\, JDC Entwine\, Moishe House\, and OneTable. He has also brought this passion to his work at Queens College Hillel for the past four years—most recently as Director of Cross-Community Engagement and Education—where he had the unique role of engaging\, empowering\, and creating meaningful Jewish experiences for Sephardic and Mizrahi students. Ruben is currently pursuing Master’s degrees in both Public Administration/Nonprofit Management and Judaic Studies at New York University. Ruben was recently named a COJECO Blueprint Fellow and is working on community projects that highlight the intersectional identities of Russian-speaking Greater Sephardic Jews. DESCRIPTION:The American Sephardi Federation invites you to join Muslim and Jewish masters of Shashmaqam from Uzbekistan and the USA as they perform classical Central Asian music as it was experienced in the royal courts of the Emirs of the Bukharan Empire more than 100 years ago. \nThe IV International Shashmaqam Forever\, a two-day Festival in Queens and Manhattan\, will bring together Muslims and Jews to celebrate the legacy of the People’s Artist of Uzbekistan\, Yunus Rajabi. The Memorial Concert will feature virtuosi vocalists and instrumentalists performing Shashmaqam\, one of the world’s most sophisticated and refined classical musical systems developed through centuries of cultural collaboration. Shashmaqam was recognized by UNESCO as a masterpiece of humanity’s intangible cultural heritage. DESCRIPTION:Emma Lazarus\, the nineteenth-century Sephardic American poet and translator\, expressed an identity particularly engaged with the Jewish legacy of medieval Spain. \nThis lecture by 2018 American Sephardi Federation Broome & Allen Fellow Leonard Stein explores Lazarus’s proto-Zionism\, sexuality\, and advocacy for a compassionate American society\, positions informed by her readings of al-Andalus and the Spanish Inquisition as interpellated by contemporary German Jewish scholars. Comparing her poetry with these historical sources reveals how her famous work against anti-Semitism and nationalist chauvinism stem from a commitment to her ancestral past. \nLeonard Stein is a Connaught International Doctoral Scholar for the Centre for Comparative Literature in a collaborative program with the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies at the University of Toronto. His research compares medieval Jewish-Iberian identity with modern literature from the Sephardic diaspora. He currently serves as the President pro tem and program chair for the Society for Crypto Judaic Studies and editor for the University of Toronto Journal of Jewish Thought. Also hear wonderful singer/accordionist Jane Carver; renowned Sephardic thought leaders\, Rabbi Marc Angel and Rabbi Nissim Elnecavé; and a musical finale by the illustrious Trio Sefardi\, with Howard Bass\, Tina Chancey\, and Susan Gaeta\, who has toured with the legendary Flory Jagoda. \nIn 2013 Yitzhak Navon\, Israel’s 5th President and Director of the National Authority for Ladino\, endorsed the idea of International Ladino Day. Sincethen\, celebrations have been held in Jerusalem\, Seattle\, Istanbul\, Madrid\, Dallas\, and Forest Hills. This will be the first festival in Manhattan! \nLadino is a bridge between cultures—it’s a Spanish language that includes words in Hebrew\, Turkish\, Arabic\, and more. It was the mother tongue of Jews in the Ottoman Empire for 500 years. In the early 20th century\, about half a million people spoke Ladino. Now there are 50\,000-100\,000 speakers. DESCRIPTION:Two emerging young leaders with first-hand experience facing extremism come together for an open dialogue on how decent people of all backgrounds can build bridges of understanding.  \nRichard Sassoon is an Iraqi-American of Jewish heritage who graduated from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and studied at the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding. Richard has traveled extensively throughout the Middle East and North Africa\, lived in Morocco while studying at al-Akhawayn University\, and assisted Syrian and Iraqi refugees in Jordan. \nAhmed Omar is the Deputy Director of MALA. He is a Somalilander American of Muslim heritage\, a refugee genocide survivor\, and has grappled with radicalism in his own family. Ahmed is a graduate of Loyola University Chicago. \nCome for an evening of thoughtful exchange on challenges and opportunities. \nBy engaging in informed and inclusive dialogue the discussion aims to help ensure a world that transcends discrimination on the basis of religion\, ethnicity\, gender identity\, sexual orientation\, or national origin.

Mark Aronson is an American Jew who is a professor of art history in Istanbul. He meets the protagonist of the novel\, Adalet\, and a relationship grows between them. Adalet is a young Turkish Muslim. Mark’s father’s side of the family is Sephardic which is why Mark is so at home in Turkey. He is raised in the Sephardic culture even though he grows up in New York City and his mother is Ashkenazi. At this time\, Istanbul is a flourishing international city with inhabitants from all over the world. \nWhat Survives is one of a three-part series. This book takes place in the recent present. The book Ms. Skoy is currently writing focuses on the coming of the Republic of Turkey and the character of Fatma\, from the first book. In the third novel\, Ms. Skoy hopes to write about the terrible events in Turkey and the Erdogan government through the same characters as appear in her first novel. \nIn her recently published memoir\, Myopia\, we learn about the life of the novelist. \nThe year is 1949. Jeannette sits on the edge of her hospital bed dressed and ready to go home with her newborn baby. She collapses onto the floor. Her brain is bleeding. Jeannette’s husband\, Nathan\, is in the army\, a brand new ophthalmologist. Their eight-year-old daughter lies in the hospital with a burst appendix. \nThe year is 1905. Nathan is born into a shtetl in Bershad\, Russia. He doesn’t know he will come into life during the worst Jewish pogroms in Russia’s history\, a bleak world filled with fear of starvation and death from hatred. \nThe time is the Great Depression. Jeannette and Nathan meet and marry in Philadelphia. He is from poverty and she is from wealth. He is a struggling student and she has graduated from the University of Pennsylvania at the top of her class in mathematics. The marriage takes place without her family’s approval. \nMs. Skoy was the baby born in 1949. She will come into this world of past and present\, of horses hooves and bleeding brains and burst appendix. How do love and laughter flourish and grow in this endangered garden? How is inter-generational fear transmitted and survived? What does trauma do to blur our vision? This is Myopia\, a memoir\, a few of the tales she can tell from her life. \n  \nAbout the Author \nPHYLLIS M. The plot is an original story of religious conflict\, intrigue\, and revenge\, set against a backdrop of the struggle for supremacy between Spain and the Ottoman Empire in the Mediterranean that takes place on the island of Malta. The title character\, Barabas\, dominates the play’s action.\nThere has been extensive debate about the play’s portrayal of Jews and how Elizabethan audiences would have viewed it. The Jew of Malta is considered to have been a major influence on William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice.\nBarabas begins the play in his counting-house. Stripped of all he has for protesting the Governor of Malta’s seizure of the wealth of the country’s whole Jewish population to pay off the warring Turks\, he develops a murderous streak by\, with the help of his slave Ithamore\, tricking the Governor’s son and his friend into fighting over the affections of his daughter\, Abigail. When they both die in a duel\, he becomes further incensed when Abigail\, horrified at what her father has done\, runs away to become a Christian nun. In retribution\, Barabas then goes on to poison her along with the whole of the nunnery\, strangles an old friar (Barnadine) who tries to make him repent for his sins and then frames another friar (Jacomo) for the first friar’s murder. After Ithamore falls in love with a prostitute who conspires with her criminal friend to blackmail and expose him (after Ithamore drunkenly tells them everything his master has done)\, Barabas poisons all three of them. When he is caught\, he drinks “of poppy and cold mandrake juice” so that he will be left for dead\, and then plots with the enemy Turks to besiege the city.\nWhen at last Barabas is nominated governor by his new allies\, he switches sides to the Christians once again. Having devised a trap for the Turks’ galley slaves and soldiers in which they will all be demolished by gunpowder\, he then sets a trap for the Turkish prince himself and his men\, hoping to boil them alive in a hidden cauldron. Just at the right moment\, however\, the former governor emerges and causes Barabas to fall into his own trap. The Christians and Turks agree to resolve their conflict without violence while the Jew curses them as he burns. \n  \nAbout DAVID SERERO \nActor and baritone\, David Serero\, has received international recognition and critical acclaim from all over the world. DESCRIPTION:At a time when the freedom of the Kurdish people is imperiled\, the American Sephardi Federation is hosting a two-part program. \nFirst\, researchers from the Diarna Geo-Museum of North African and Middle Eastern Jewish Life will present a virtual guided tour of Jewish historical sites in Iraqi-Kurdistan\, ranging from synagogues and communal caves to the purported shrines of Biblical prophets and the tomb of the first woman rabbi. \nAfterward\, ASF Board Member Jamil Ezra\, a native of Baghdad\, will share his inspiring story of fleeing 1970s Baathist Iraq with the help of the Kurdish fighters known as Peshmurga\, who included a young Masoud Barzani. Now President of the Kurdish Regional Government\, Barzani personally drove Jamil to freedom. \nThe Diarna virtual guided journey to Jewish-Iraqi Kurdistan is the product of nine years of research and multiple research expeditions. \nJust before the rise of ISIS\, a team of researchers from Diarna journeyed to Iraqi-Kurdistan to document the last remnants of Jewish life\, more than fifty years after the community disbanded. Warmly greeted by Kurds who fondly remembered their Jewish neighbors and Peshmurga who invited them for tea at a checkpoint\, the Diarna researchers discovered hidden Jewish history in caves and behind crumbling walls. SUMMARY:Jewish Heritage of the Deccan Book
DESCRIPTION:Please join us to celebrate the Deccan Heritage Foundation’s new publication; Jewish Heritage of the Deccan; Mumbai\, The Northern Konan\, Pune. \nCo-authored by Kenneth X. Robbins and Pushkar Sohoni\, this guidebook is illustrated with splendid\, newly commissioned photographs by Surendra Kumar. It is the first such publication to describe the synagogues\, cemeteries\, libraries\, schools and research centers of the Bene Israel community and the more recent émigré Baghdadi Jews in the state of Maharashtra\, India. Monuments and sites of both communities are preserved in Mumbai (Bombay) and Pune (Poona)\, as well as in the smaller towns in the northern Konkan region.\nDescriptions are arranged according to itineraries to encourage citizens of Mumbai and Pune\, as well as visitors to these cities and the towns of the Konkan\, to discover this often overlooked aspect of local history. Intended as a handy reference to the Jewish presence in Maharashtra\, the volume should contribute to a better appreciation of this significant aspect of Deccan history\, and hopefully to the preservation of Jewish sites and monuments for future generations.\n \nJewish Heritage of the Deccan Book — A talk with Dr. George Michell\, Editor and Kenneth X. Among his many publications are Architecture and Art of the Deccan Sultanates\, Mughal Architecture & Gardens\, Falaknuma Palace\, Hyderabad\, Late Temple Architecture of India\, and Mansions of Chettinad. He is based in London\, and is a founding trustee of the Deccan Heritage Foundation in the UK. \nKenneth X. Robbins is a psychiatrist based in Washington D.C.\, as well as a collector of South Asian art\, and historian of expatriate communities in India. He is co-editor of African Elites in India: Habshi Amarat (Ahmedabad\, 2006) and Western Jews in India (New Delhi\, 2013)\, and curator of an exhibition on Jews in India held at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts\, New Delhi\, in 2017. He is also interested in Maharajas\, Nawabs and Indian Princely States. \nASF proudly worked with Dr. Robbins to create the traveling exhibit\, “Baghdadis & the Bene Israel in Bollywood & Beyond\,” which was covered by NBC News\, Desi Talk (the NY Metro print edition of The New Times India)\, The Jewish Week\, and The Jerusalem Report. DESCRIPTION:The Jewish Heritage of Malta: An evening exploring a beautiful island’s connection to Jewish history and culture \nProudly presented by The American Sephardi Federation and New York Jewish Travel Guide. \nEvidence of Jewish history dates back to Roman times (4-5 Century) as seen at the St. Paul’s Catacomb site at Rabat\, Malta\, where several Jewish catacombs (pictured above) can be found alongside Christian burials.  \nThe contemporary Maltese Jewish community is composed of immigrants from Gibraltar\, England\, North Africa\, Portugal\, and Turkey\, arriving over the course of French and British rule starting in 1798. During the early 20th century\, the islands Jews did not have a rabbi of their own and rabbis would often be flown in from Sicily to perform ceremonies. During World War II\, Malta was the only European country not requiring visas for Jews fleeing German rule. Numerous Maltese Jews\, moreover\, fought Germany in the British Army during the war. DESCRIPTION:The Jewish Agency for Israel and American Sephardi Federation invite you to meet Arielle Di Porto\, who grew-up in a Moroccan-Sephardi home\, made Aliyah at age 17\, and has dedicated her life to ensuring the safety of every Jew. \nFor several decades she has worked tirelessly to facilitate the Aliyah of Jews who choose to make Israel their home —whether by choice or circumstance. SUMMARY:Echoes of Jewish Morocco Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Jewish life has been part of the Moroccan landscape for over two millennia. \nThe sites that once comprised Jewish communities —synagogues\, schools\, shrines\, cemeteries\, and other structures— are found everywhere from metropolitan city centers to Atlas mountain towns and adobe villages at the edge of the Sahara desert. These disparate locations speak to the diversity of the Moroccan Jewish experience. While communities have disbanded\, many of the landmarks remain\, and memories of their inhabitants linger.\nAs time passes\, however\, the physical remnants of Jewish history are at risk of disappearing. The Diarna Geo-Museum endeavors to virtually preserve and make accessible Jewish sites like these throughout North Africa and the Middle East. \nIn addition to documenting the physical traces\, another important aspect of Diarna’s mission is to preserve the bearers of memories connected to these places. To that end\, included in this exhibit are portraits of Jews still living in Morocco and the Muslim friends\, former neighbors and current caretakers who enlighten our understanding of the people who once resided in these communities.\nOver the course of several years and multiple research expeditions we documented more than 100 sites\, which are part of an online exhibit\, D’fina: Jewish Treasures of Morocco (JewishMorocco.org). At only 35 years old\, he has already performed more than 1\,000 concerts and performances throughout the world and played in over 100 films and recorded 20 albums. He has given concerts in Paris at the PARIS OPERA GARNIER\, OLYMPIA\, EIFFEL TOWER; in New York at the LINCOLN CENTER\, CARNEGIE HALL\, TIMES SQUARE; in London at the ROYAL COLLEGE OF MUSIC\, WEMBLEY STADIUM; and in Moscow at the TCHAIKOVSKY HALL; in Amsterdam at the CONCERTGEBOUW\, the BUDAPEST OPERA conducted by PLACIDO DOMINGO and more. He made his sold out WEST END debuts at the Dominion Theatre. He has sung more than 30 lead roles in Opera\, Operetta and Musical Theater. In 2012\, David Serero performed Don Quixote from MAN OF LA MANCHA in Paris and the title role from the revival of Duke Ellington’s only musical: BEGGAR’S HOLIDAY and also starred in the cast album recording. In 2013\, David performed with JERMAINE JACKSON in YOU ARE NOT ALONE\, a musical written\, directed and produced by David Serero. He has also produced and arranged I WISH YOU LOVE an album of Jazz standards for Jermaine Jackson. In December 2013\, David shared the cover of Theatre & Performances with Barbra Streisand in London\, and made his BROADWAY solo debut at the Snapple Theatre in New York and released his first studio album ALL I CARE ABOUT IS LOVE. In 2014\, he released The Broadway Baritone featuring Broadway classics and toured in the UK with a performance on WEST END. During the summer 2014\, he recorded the entire love letters’s correspondence of NAPOLEON to Josephine and released his new studio album THE CROONER BARITONE\, The FRANK SINATRA Classics for the 100th anniversary of Sinatra. In 2015 and 2016\, he played Off Broadway the lead roles of SHYLOCK (MERCHANT OF VENICE) and OTHELLO’s title role with both critical acclaim. In 2015\, he performed two open air concerts on TIMES SQUARE (New York) for BEST OF FRANCE with the presence of the French President Mr Francois Hollande. He released SEPHARDI\, an album of Sephardic music in Ladino language and records the title role of RICHARD III in French. In 2016\, he releases ALL MY LOVE IS FOR YOU\, a Pop Rock album\, entirely composed\, performed\, arranged and produced by himself. Borochov brings a unique sound with him wherever he goes. Deeply immersed in the jazz tradition\, Borochov’s search for his personal roots resulted in an ever-expanding love for Arab and Pan-African musical sensibilities a natural palette for a trumpeter-composer raised in Jaffa\, an integrated Muslim-Jewish-Christian city. \nAfter working with such legendary artists as Curtis Fuller and Candido Camero\, and having served as arranger and co-producer for acclaimed world music sensation Yemen Blues\, Borochov set out on his own path. His critically acclaimed debut recording Outset (2014) was included in the New York City Jazz Records Best of 2014 List\, and his forthcoming album Boomerang was chosen as “revelation of the month” on Jazz Magazine.
