SUMMARY:Queen Esther's dilemma - The Musical
DESCRIPTION:The Queen Esther’s Dilemma\, a musical by Samuel J. Bernstein\, is inspired by the Biblical Book of Esther. This original musical play blends humor with anguish\, tragedy with triumph\, while exploring Jewish identity in all its complexities. \nFour exceptional performances: \nMarch 1st at 2 pm (special Purim performance)\nMarch 4th at 8 pm (opening night)\nMarch 13th at 3 pm\nMarch 18th at 6 pm \nPerformances will take place at the Center for Jewish located at 15 West 16th Street\, New York NY 10011. \nTickets are $20 and $30. \nIn The Queens Dilemma\, inspired by the Biblical Book of Esther\, a contemporary Purim Party is interwoven with the principal features of the traditional Purim story. The party includes Purim games; dancing; singing; and\, of course\, the drinking of many cups of wine. The Biblical narrative recounts the efforts of Haman\, an evil Persian\, to annihilate the Jews\, and the actions of Queen Esther; Mordechai\, her cousin; and King Ahasuerus to counteract the machinations of Haman. In this theatrical rendering\, Esther faces various difficult ethical problems as she strives to be a woman loyal to the interests of the Jews\, as interpreted by Mordechai\, and yet a person with strong pacifistic inclinations. \nFull production with a cast of 8 actors and orchestra.

DESCRIPTION:The 21st-anniversary edition of the NY Sephardic Jewish Film Festival features compelling stories and evocative documentaries about Iraqi\, Syrian\, Mexican\, Egyptian\, Israeli\, French\, Tunisian\, Ethiopian\, and Greek communities \nThe American Sephardi Federation’s NY Sephardic Jewish Film Festival showcases contemporary voices steeped in the history\, traditions\, and rich mosaic culture of Greater Sephardic communities. The ten-day Festival features premiere film screenings\, intriguing stories\, evocative documentaries\, Q&As with filmmakers\, as well as special honorees and guests. The Pomegranate Awards Ceremony on Opening Night celebrates Sephardi excellence in the arts. Past recipients include Senior Counselor to the King of Morocco André Azoulay\, French-Algerian recording legend Enrico Macias\, Kuwaiti star and human rights activist Ema Shah\, and Morocco-Israeli poet Erez Bitton. \nEach night of the Festival is a different themed program honoring the rich and diverse communities ASF represents. \n“For the NYSJFF 21st Edition\, we are proud to present poignant and powerful programs\, including a number of New York premieres\,” said Sara Nodjoumi\, Artistic Director of the New York Sephardic Jewish Film Festival. “From Stars\, Konrad Wolf’s classic\, cinematic gem on the Greek Holocaust experience\, to Cecile Peck’s Brave Miss World about a Moroccan-Israeli beauty contestant’s struggle against sexual violence\, these are universal stories that speak to the issues of our time (discrimination\, persecution\, immigration\, resistance) and all time\,” Nodjoumi said. \nNYSJFF Artistic Director Sara Nodjoumi produced The Iran Job\, and is a programming alumna of the Tribeca Film Festival\, where her latest film\, When God Sleeps\, premiered earlier this year.  \nDavid Serero\, the producer of the NYSJFF’s star-studded 20th edition\, returns to produce this year’s Festival. A Moroccan-French opera singer and actor with many credits to his name\, Serero previously created and starred in ASF’s successful theatrical season (Merchant of Venice\, Othello\, and Nabucco)\, and will star in April and June 2018 as Cyrano of Bergerac and Don Giovanni at the ASF. \nAll films and events are taking place at the Center for Jewish History located at 15 West 16th Street. The complete list of selected NYSJFF films with dates\, times\, as well as pass and ticket information can be found at www.nysephardifilmfestival.org  \n  \nMoroccan Opening Night\, Monday\, March 5th. \nProgram to be soon announced. \n  \nTuesday\, March 6th at 7 pm: The Syrian Sephardic Community \nThe Syrian Jewish Community: Our Journey Through History\nTHE JEWS OF SYRIA\, 1930-1967\nDirected by Lisa Ades\nExecutive Produced by Joseph J. Sitt\nDocumentary Feature\, 90 min\, USA\, 2014\, English \nFrom Executive Producer\, Joseph J. Sitt\, the sixth installment of his multi-part series on the Syrian Sephardi community\, is the fascinating story of life in Syria for the Jews who remained there after the massive exodus to the US and other countries in the early 1900s. Weaving together stories of pogroms and fires in Aleppo and Damascus in 1947 and 1948\, of repression and heroic escapes as Jews in Syria\, Lebanon\, and Egypt fled persecution\, the mysterious Aleppo Codex (part of which was smuggled to safety in Israel)\, the courageous Rabbi Abraham Kalmanowitz who helped Syrian boys escape to New York\, and the Jewish spy\, Elie Cohen\, who helped his brothers in Israel win the Six Day War before his capture and execution\, this is an incredible film about one of the Jewish People’s oldest and most illustrious communities. \n  \nWednesday\, March 7th at 7:00 pm: Anti-Semitism in France \nWHY DO THEY HATE US?\nDirected by Alexandre Amiel\nDocumentary Feature\, 81 min\, France\, 2016\, French with English subtitles\nNY Premiere\nFollowed by a Panel discussion \nIn 2015\, French and Belgian-born ISIS terrorists massacred civilians in Paris\, including at the office of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and the famed Bataclan Theatre. Motivated by these attacks—the deadliest in France since World War II—and his son’s questions about the murderers\, Alexandre Amiel\, a French-Moroccan Sephardi filmmaker and veteran reporter\, produced a trilogy of documentaries exploring hatred from the perspectives of its primary victims in French society by profiling three representatives: himself\, Amelle Chahbi (a comedienne of Moroccan descent)\, and Lucien Jean-Baptiste (an actor and director who was born in the Caribbean). This NY premiere of the episode relating to anti-Semitism is a must-see in this age of rising religious and racial hatreds\, nationalist chauvinism\, and violence. \n  \nThursday\, March 8th at 7 pm: Undying Romance in Mexico – Sephardi-style \nNORA’S WILL\nDirected by Mariana Chenillo\nNarrative Feature\, 90 min\, Mexico\, 2010\, Spanish with English subtitles\nFollowed by a Mexican After-Party \nWhen his ex-wife Nora dies right before Passover\, José is forced to stay with her body until she can be properly put to rest. He soon realizes he is part of Nora’s plan to bring her family back together for one last Passover feast\, leading José to rediscover their undying love for each other. A comedy like no other\, and directed by Mariana Chenillo\, the first female director to win Mexico’s Best Picture Award. \n  \nSaturday\, March 10th at 8:30 pm: Classic Movie Night: Greek Sephardim in the Holocaust \nSTARS\nDirected by Konrad Wolf\nNarrative Feature\, 88 min\, East Germany / Bulgaria\, 1959\, German\, Bulgarian\, Yiddish\, and Ladino with English subtitles \nA classic film from one of Germany’s greatest filmmakers\, Stars won The Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1959. The film exquisitely tells the story of a Nazi officer who falls in love with a Greek-Sephardi Jewish girl while escorting Jewish prisoners through Bulgaria to a concentration camp. \n  \nSunday\, March 11th at 1:30pm: The Promised Land: Ma’abarot Memories \nTHE ANCESTRAL SIN\nDirected by David Deri\nDocumentary Feature\, 109 min\, Israel\, 2017\, Hebrew and Darija (Moroccan Arabic) with English subtitles\nNY Premiere \nIn the first two decades after the re-establishment of Israel\, the director’s family\, originally from Morocco\, were part of the wave of refugees from Greater Sephardi communities who came to the fledgling Jewish State. As other immigrants coming to this Promised but poor land\, Deri’s family were taken to a “development town\,” Yeruham in the Negev Desert\, as part of a population disbursement policy that pushed Sephardim to the country’s periphery. This chilling documentary shares personal stories that reveal the price immigrant-families have paid and the price still being paid by Israeli society for the discriminatory policies of its Ashkenazi-dominated early years. \nROCK IN THE RED ZONE (3:30 pm)\nDirected by Laura Bialis\nDocumentary Feature\, 92 min\, Israel\, 2014\, English & Hebrew with English subtitles \nFear and danger are never far for residents of the development town\, Sderot\, where missiles rain down on civilians routinely from Hamas and other Islamist forces in the nearby Gaza Strip. Despite the almost daily trauma\, a community of young artists—Greater Sephardi Jews of mainly Moroccan\, Kurdish\, and Persian descent—have found an artistic outlet for their anger and hope\, creating world-infused music every single day. \n  \nSunday\, March 11th at 5:30 pm: The Egyptian Experience \nSTARTING OVER AGAIN\nDirected by Ruggero Gabbai\nDocumentary Feature\, 64 min\, USA\, 2015\, English\nNY Premiere \nFilmed in Paris\, Milan\, New York\, London\, Washington\, Sydney\, Tel Aviv\, and Jerusalem\, this personal documentary is the story of Egyptian Jews during 1948-1956. Narrated by twenty witnesses\, this NY premiere deftly weaves historical events and archival footage\, a powerful film about resilience and reinvention. \nTHE BAND’S VISIT (7:00 pm)\nDirected by Eran Kolirin\nNarrative Feature\, 87 min\, Israel\, 2007\, Arabic & Hebrew with English subtitles\nWhen a band of eight Egyptian musicians arrives by mistake in a small town in Israel’s Negev Desert\, they stop at a restaurant owned by Dina (the late and great ASF Pomegranate Award Honoree\, Ronit Elkabetz)\, who offers them lodging. Now an award-winning Broadway musical\, this classic is both a clever\, subtle slice-of-life comedy\, and poignant cross-cultural exploration. \n  \nMonday\, March 12th at 7:00 pm: Young Professionals Night – A Moroccan Israeli’s #MeToo \nBRAVE MISS WORLD\nDirected by Cecilia Peck\nDocumentary Feature\, 92 min\, USA\, 2013\, English\, Hebrew & Italian with English subtitles\nQ&A with Filmmaker \nWeeks before winning the 1998 Miss World pageant\, Moroccan-Israeli teen Linor Abargil was held captive and raped by her travel agent while heading home from an Italian modeling assignment. Ten years later\, she resolved to confront her past and reach out to other rape survivors. An inspiring story about courage and the universal struggle to stop rampant sexual violence against women. \n  \nTuesday\, March 13th: SEPHARDI SHORTS PROGRAM \nTHE PIRATE CAPTAIN TOLEDANO\nDirected by Arnon Shorr\nShort Narrative\, 10 min\, USA\, 2017\, English\nNY Premiere \nOn a 16th century ship\, a Jewish stowaway who fled the Inquisition wants to become a pirate to avenge Spanish persecution. The captain must decide whether to make him a pirate… or make him walk the plank. An imaginary take on the real history of the Sephardi pirates of the Caribbean. \nSARA LEVY COHEN\nDirected by Zohar Melinik\nDocumentary Short\, 13 min\, Israel\, Ladino & Hebrew with English subtitles\nNY Premiere \nA 96-year old woman has lived in the same apartment for 70 years in Jerusalem. Before immigrating to Israel from Turkey\, she sang traditional songs in Ladino\, her mother-tongue. While Ladino fades away\, it also reveals a story of cultural identity in constant motion. \n116 CAMERAS\nDirected by Davina Pardo\nDocumentary Short\, 16 min\, USA\, English \nAs the Holocaust survivor community ages\, the USC Shoah Foundation has embarked on an ambitious new project to transform survivors into 3D digital projections that will interact with generations to come. Short-listed for a 2018 Academy Award\, 116 CAMERAS follows Auschwitz survivor Eva Schloss\, as she goes through this unique process and reflects on how her role as a Holocaust speaker has changed over time.\nThe film’s Emmy Award-winning director\, Davina Pardo\, received ASF’s Ronit Elkabetz “Rising Star” Pomegranate Award at the 20th NY Sephardic Jewish Film Festival. \nKEEP IT COOL\nDirected by Na’ama Keha\nNarrative Short\, 17 min\, Israel\, Hebrew with English subtitles\nQ&A with Filmmaker \nTomer\, a teenage girl\, has an unexpected visit by her older brother Uri\, who has been injured during his service in the IDF and is now confined to a wheelchair. Uri is aware of his impotence while Tomer is just discovering her own sexuality and womanhood. \nAn uncomfortable first film from this year’s Ronit Elkabetz “Rising Star” Pomegranate Award Recipient. \n  \nWednesday\, March 14th at 7 pm: On the Road to Zion \nTWO ZIONS: THE LIVING LEGACY OF THE QUEEN OF SHEBA & KING SOLOMON\nDirected by Cheryl Halpern\nDocumentary Feature\, 58 min\, USA / Ethiopia / Israel\, English\, Amharic & Hebrew with English subtitles\nQ&A with filmmaker & subject \n“Two Zions” tells the story of people from two seemingly disparate countries who share a bond originating in biblical times. Focusing on the “Zions” of Jerusalem\, Israel and Axum\, Ethiopia\, and the fascinating history that links these holy places\, the film focuses on the relationship between King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. \n  \nCLOSING NIGHT: Thursday\, March 15th at 7 pm: Tunisia & Iraqi Closing Night \nJOURNEY FROM TUNISIA\nDirected by Jonathan Maimon\nShort Documentary\, 30 min\, USA\, English\, Arabic\, & Hebrew with English subtitles\nNY Premiere \nWhat began as a few simple interviews of his Sephardic grandparents turned into an epic and spell-binding documentary about emigration\, immigration\, upheaval\, disappointment\, and adaptation. The film features rare archival footage of the Nazi invasion of Tunisia during World War II\, as well as the joyous celebration of its liberation by Allied Forces in May 1943. Journey from Tunisia is a film about the upheaval of centuries-old roots for Jews and their Arab neighbors in North Africa\, and the creation of new-old roots in Israel. \nREMEMBER BAGHDAD\nDirected by Fiona Murphy\nFeature Documentary\, 69 min\, UK / USA\, English\nNY Premiere\nQ&A with Filmmaker \nIn this expertly made documentary\, using a unique blend of powerful home movies and photos\, alongside public source news footage\, we meet several storied Baghdadi Jewish families: the Dallals who import tires\, the Khalastchis who sell cars\, the Shamashes who are property developers and politicians\, and the Dangoors who import Coca-Cola – all working in partnerships with their Muslim Iraqi friends and neighbors. The story of Baghdad’s last Jews—from gaiety to revolutions\, community celebrations to persecution and public hangings—opens out onto the wider story of the effectual end of Iraq’s Jewish community after 2\,500 years. \n  \nAbout The American Sephardi Federation \nThe American Sephardi Federation\, a Partner of the landmark Center for Jewish History\, proudly preserves and promotes the history\, traditions\, and rich mosaic culture of Greater Sephardic communities as an integral part of the Jewish experience. SUMMARY:At the Intersection of Sephardic\, Mizrahi\, and Russian-Speaking
DESCRIPTION:At the Intersection of Sephardic\, Mizrahi\, and Russian-Speaking: A Three-Part Learning and Cultural Series on the Greater Sephardic Communities of the Former Soviet Union \nAmerican Sephardi Federation’s Young Sephardi Scholars Series\, in partnership with COJECO BluePrint Fellowship\, is excited to host a three-part learning and cultural series about the Russian-speaking Jewish (RSJ) communities of the Greater Sephardic world. The cultures and histories of Bukharian\, Georgian\, and Kavkazi (Mountain) Jews are situated at the fascinating\, yet lesser known\, intersection of RSJ\, Sephardic\, and Mizrahi life. Led by Ruben Shimonov\, this interactive multimedia learning series will provide a unique opportunity to explore the rich and multilayered stories of the three communities. \nThe dates of the series are: 2/26 (Kavkazi Jews)\, 3/20 (Bukharian Jews)\, and 4/24 (Georgian Jews).  \nAll sessions will begin at 7 pm in ASF’s Sephardi Scholars Center at the Center for Jewish History (15 West 16th Street\, NY\, NY 10011).  \nLight dinner reflecting the cuisine of Bukharian\, Georgian\, and Kavkazi Jews will be served.  \nRegistration: $10 per session or $20 for all 3. \n  \nRuben Shimonov\, 2018 American Sephardi Federation Broome & Allen Fellow\, was born in Uzbekistan and grew up in the vibrant Greek and Turkish Sephardic community of Seattle. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in International Relations\, Near Eastern Studies\, and Jewish Studies from the University of Washington. As a Bukharian Jew—whose own multilayered identity lies at the intersection of Mizrahi\, Sephardic\, and RSJ—Ruben roots his work as an educator\, social innovator\, and community builder in a deep passion for the diverse cultural mosaic of the Jewish people. This has informed his active leadership and community organizing endeavors within organizations such as the American Sephardi Federation (where he is the Young Leadership Board’s VP of Education and Community Engagement)\, JDC Entwine\, Moishe House\, and OneTable. He has also brought this passion to his work at Queens College Hillel for the past four years—most recently as Director of Cross-Community Engagement and Education—where he had the unique role of engaging\, empowering\, and creating meaningful Jewish experiences for Sephardic and Mizrahi students. Ruben is currently pursuing Master’s degrees in both Public Administration/Nonprofit Management and Judaic Studies at New York University. Ruben was recently named a COJECO Blueprint Fellow and is working on community projects that highlight the intersectional identities of Russian-speaking Greater Sephardic Jews. He is also the founder of the Sephardic-Mizrahi LGBTQ Shabbat Dinner Series and annual retreats\, which provide a one-of-a-kind platform for LGBTQ Jews from Sephardic and Mizrahi backgrounds to build a vibrant and supportive community. \n— \nThis learning series is created as part of COJECO BluePrint Fellowship supported by COJECO and Genesis Philanthropy Group.

SUMMARY:Emma Lazarus' Sephardic Return
DESCRIPTION:Emma Lazarus\, the nineteenth-century Sephardic American poet and translator\, expressed an identity particularly engaged with the Jewish legacy of medieval Spain. \nThis lecture by 2018 American Sephardi Federation Broome & Allen Fellow Leonard Stein explores Lazarus’s proto-Zionism\, sexuality\, and advocacy for a compassionate American society\, positions informed by her readings of al-Andalus and the Spanish Inquisition as interpellated by contemporary German Jewish scholars. Comparing her poetry with these historical sources reveals how her famous work against anti-Semitism and nationalist chauvinism stem from a commitment to her ancestral past. \nLeonard Stein is a Connaught International Doctoral Scholar for the Centre for Comparative Literature in a collaborative program with the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies at the University of Toronto. His research compares medieval Jewish-Iberian identity with modern literature from the Sephardic diaspora. He currently serves as the President pro tem and program chair for the Society for Crypto Judaic Studies and editor for the University of Toronto Journal of Jewish Thought. His newest publications include “Jubanidad and the Literary Transmission of Cuban Crypto-Judaism” for the forthcoming edited volume\, Caribbean-Jewish Crossings: Atlantic Literature and Theory (University of Virginia Press)\, and “The New Literature of Hip Hop Music” for the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Hip Hop Music Studies.

SUMMARY:International Ladino Day
DESCRIPTION:Join the American Sephardi Federation for a festival of stories and songs celebrating Ladino\, the remarkable language also known as Judeo-Spanish. \nDr. Jane Mushabac will perform excerpts from her highly acclaimed 2016 novel\, rich with Ladino expressions: His Hundred Years\, A Tale. Also hear wonderful singer/accordionist Jane Carver; renowned Sephardic thought leaders\, Rabbi Marc Angel and Rabbi Nissim Elnecavé; and a musical finale by the illustrious Trio Sefardi\, with Howard Bass\, Tina Chancey\, and Susan Gaeta\, who has toured with the legendary Flory Jagoda. \nIn 2013 Yitzhak Navon\, Israel’s 5th President and Director of the National Authority for Ladino\, endorsed the idea of International Ladino Day. SUMMARY:Myopia: A Memoir
DESCRIPTION:Join author Phyllis M Skoy for her New York City debut of Myopia\, a memoir\, in which she explores how trauma blurs our vision.\n \nTold through the life of Skoy’s ophthalmologist father\, who fled the Russian pogroms\, Myopia asks whether we can ever really know another person. \nThe Kovno Room at the\nCenter for Jewish History\n15 W 16th Street\nNew York\, NY 10011 \nPhyllis Skoy’s first novel\, What Survives\, takes place in Turkey. Mark Aronson is an American Jew who is a professor of art history in Istanbul. He meets the protagonist of the novel\, Adalet\, and a relationship grows between them. Adalet is a young Turkish Muslim. Mark’s father’s side of the family is Sephardic which is why Mark is so at home in Turkey. He is raised in the Sephardic culture even though he grows up in New York City and his mother is Ashkenazi. At this time\, Istanbul is a flourishing international city with inhabitants from all over the world. \nWhat Survives is one of a three-part series. This book takes place in the recent present. The book Ms. Skoy is currently writing focuses on the coming of the Republic of Turkey and the character of Fatma\, from the first book. In the third novel\, Ms. Skoy hopes to write about the terrible events in Turkey and the Erdogan government through the same characters as appear in her first novel. \nIn her recently published memoir\, Myopia\, we learn about the life of the novelist. \nThe year is 1949. Jeannette sits on the edge of her hospital bed dressed and ready to go home with her newborn baby. She collapses onto the floor. Her brain is bleeding. Jeannette’s husband\, Nathan\, is in the army\, a brand new ophthalmologist. Their eight-year-old daughter lies in the hospital with a burst appendix. \nThe year is 1905. Nathan is born into a shtetl in Bershad\, Russia. He doesn’t know he will come into life during the worst Jewish pogroms in Russia’s history\, a bleak world filled with fear of starvation and death from hatred. \nThe time is the Great Depression. Jeannette and Nathan meet and marry in Philadelphia. He is from poverty and she is from wealth. He is a struggling student and she has graduated from the University of Pennsylvania at the top of her class in mathematics. The marriage takes place without her family’s approval. \nMs. Skoy was the baby born in 1949. She will come into this world of past and present\, of horses hooves and bleeding brains and burst appendix. How do love and laughter flourish and grow in this endangered garden? How is inter-generational fear transmitted and survived? What does trauma do to blur our vision? This is Myopia\, a memoir\, a few of the tales she can tell from her life. \n  \nAbout the Author \nPHYLLIS M. SKOY lives with her husband and Australian cattle dog in Placitas\, New Mexico where she settled after living on the Upper West Side of Manhattan for many years. She currently maintains a small private practice in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy in Albuquerque. \n  \nRESERVATIONS REQUIRED \nRSVP here.

The plot is an original story of religious conflict\, intrigue\, and revenge\, set against a backdrop of the struggle for supremacy between Spain and the Ottoman Empire in the Mediterranean that takes place on the island of Malta. The title character\, Barabas\, dominates the play’s action.\nThere has been extensive debate about the play’s portrayal of Jews and how Elizabethan audiences would have viewed it. The Jew of Malta is considered to have been a major influence on William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice.\nBarabas begins the play in his counting-house. Stripped of all he has for protesting the Governor of Malta’s seizure of the wealth of the country’s whole Jewish population to pay off the warring Turks\, he develops a murderous streak by\, with the help of his slave Ithamore\, tricking the Governor’s son and his friend into fighting over the affections of his daughter\, Abigail. When they both die in a duel\, he becomes further incensed when Abigail\, horrified at what her father has done\, runs away to become a Christian nun. In retribution\, Barabas then goes on to poison her along with the whole of the nunnery\, strangles an old friar (Barnadine) who tries to make him repent for his sins and then frames another friar (Jacomo) for the first friar’s murder. After Ithamore falls in love with a prostitute who conspires with her criminal friend to blackmail and expose him (after Ithamore drunkenly tells them everything his master has done)\, Barabas poisons all three of them. When he is caught\, he drinks “of poppy and cold mandrake juice” so that he will be left for dead\, and then plots with the enemy Turks to besiege the city.\nWhen at last Barabas is nominated governor by his new allies\, he switches sides to the Christians once again. Having devised a trap for the Turks’ galley slaves and soldiers in which they will all be demolished by gunpowder\, he then sets a trap for the Turkish prince himself and his men\, hoping to boil them alive in a hidden cauldron. Just at the right moment\, however\, the former governor emerges and causes Barabas to fall into his own trap. The Christians and Turks agree to resolve their conflict without violence while the Jew curses them as he burns. \n  \nAbout DAVID SERERO \nActor and baritone\, David Serero\, has received international recognition and critical acclaim from all over the world. SUMMARY:No Friends but the Kurds
DESCRIPTION:At a time when the freedom of the Kurdish people is imperiled\, the American Sephardi Federation is hosting a two-part program. \nFirst\, researchers from the Diarna Geo-Museum of North African and Middle Eastern Jewish Life will present a virtual guided tour of Jewish historical sites in Iraqi-Kurdistan\, ranging from synagogues and communal caves to the purported shrines of Biblical prophets and the tomb of the first woman rabbi. \nAfterward\, ASF Board Member Jamil Ezra\, a native of Baghdad\, will share his inspiring story of fleeing 1970s Baathist Iraq with the help of the Kurdish fighters known as Peshmurga\, who included a young Masoud Barzani. Now President of the Kurdish Regional Government\, Barzani personally drove Jamil to freedom. \nThe Diarna virtual guided journey to Jewish-Iraqi Kurdistan is the product of nine years of research and multiple research expeditions. \nJust before the rise of ISIS\, a team of researchers from Diarna journeyed to Iraqi-Kurdistan to document the last remnants of Jewish life\, more than fifty years after the community disbanded. Warmly greeted by Kurds who fondly remembered their Jewish neighbors and Peshmurga who invited them for tea at a checkpoint\, the Diarna researchers discovered hidden Jewish history in caves and behind crumbling walls. Learn about fascinating sites in Amediye\, Akre\, al-Qoosh\, Betanur\, Kirkuk\, and elsewhere. \nMore recently\, as detailed in Newsweek’s March 3\, 2017 cover story (http://ln.is/x0Y8mGk)\, a Diarna researcher survived an ISIS chemical attack at Sinjar as work continues to discover and document the area’s rich Jewish history. \nReservation required.

SUMMARY:Jewish Heritage of Malta
DESCRIPTION:The Jewish Heritage of Malta: An evening exploring a beautiful island’s connection to Jewish history and culture \nProudly presented by The American Sephardi Federation and New York Jewish Travel Guide. \nEvidence of Jewish history dates back to Roman times (4-5 Century) as seen at the St. Paul’s Catacomb site at Rabat\, Malta\, where several Jewish catacombs (pictured above) can be found alongside Christian burials.  \nThe contemporary Maltese Jewish community is composed of immigrants from Gibraltar\, England\, North Africa\, Portugal\, and Turkey\, arriving over the course of French and British rule starting in 1798. During the early 20th century\, the islands Jews did not have a rabbi of their own and rabbis would often be flown in from Sicily to perform ceremonies. During World War II\, Malta was the only European country not requiring visas for Jews fleeing German rule. Numerous Maltese Jews\, moreover\, fought Germany in the British Army during the war. Today\, a small but active community of under 200 Jews live on Malta with their own synagogue and rabbis. \nFeaturing guest speaker Dr. John Baldacchino (Director\, University of Wisconsin-Madison Arts Institute)\, the program will present multimedia presentations showing Jewish heritage sites in Malta in the past and present. \n  \nJewish Heritage of Malta — An evening exploring a beautiful island’s connection to Jewish history and culture\nOctober 23th at 6:00 pm. \nLeo & Julia Forchheimer Auditorium and Paul S. & Sylvia Steinberg Great Hall \nCenter for Jewish History\n15 w 16th St\nNew York NY 10011 \n  \nPresented in Partnership with: \nThe Malta Tourism Authority\nExclusively Malta Luxury Travel\, Ltd.\nCorinthia Palace Hotel & Spa \nRSVP required.

Di Porto’s strong sense of love for the Jewish People and State of Israel and drive to rescue endangered Jews characterizes a career in which she participated in some of most critical and sensitive emigration missions in Jewish history\, including special operations to ex-filtrate Jewish refugees from Cuba\, Iran\, Turkey\, Pakistan\, Lebanon\, Syria\, Yemen\, and other hot spots. \nToday\, she serves as the Jewish Agency for Israel’s Director of the Aliyah Division of the Unit for Aliyah\, Absorption & Special Operations\, responsible for Aliyah from around the world\, including the United States\, as well as directly charged with Aliyah from France and clandestine Aliyah efforts from countries in the Middle East. \nThe American Sephardi Federation is proud to partner with the Jewish Agency for Israel to provide a rare look behind-the-headlines at the vital\, life-saving work of Arielle Di Porto and her colleagues on behalf of the Jewish People and State of Israel. \nRescuing Endangered Jews — Aliyah\, Absorption\, & Special Ops Unit\nOctober 19th at 7:15 pm. \nKovno Room\nCenter for Jewish History\n15 W 16th Street\nNew York\, NY 10011 \nRSVP Required: https://goo.gl/forms/BKYkcr21qvCfmE9V2

SUMMARY:Echoes of Jewish Morocco Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Jewish life has been part of the Moroccan landscape for over two millennia. \nThe sites that once comprised Jewish communities —synagogues\, schools\, shrines\, cemeteries\, and other structures— are found everywhere from metropolitan city centers to Atlas mountain towns and adobe villages at the edge of the Sahara desert. These disparate locations speak to the diversity of the Moroccan Jewish experience. While communities have disbanded\, many of the landmarks remain\, and memories of their inhabitants linger.\nAs time passes\, however\, the physical remnants of Jewish history are at risk of disappearing. The Diarna Geo-Museum endeavors to virtually preserve and make accessible Jewish sites like these throughout North Africa and the Middle East. \nIn addition to documenting the physical traces\, another important aspect of Diarna’s mission is to preserve the bearers of memories connected to these places. To that end\, included in this exhibit are portraits of Jews still living in Morocco and the Muslim friends\, former neighbors and current caretakers who enlighten our understanding of the people who once resided in these communities.\nOver the course of several years and multiple research expeditions we documented more than 100 sites\, which are part of an online exhibit\, D’fina: Jewish Treasures of Morocco (JewishMorocco.org). The photographs in this exhibit are a small selection of the wide array of locales visited for Diarna. \nJoshua Shamsi is the Lead Photographer and Outreach Director of the Diarna Geo-Museum of North African and Middle Eastern Jewish Life. \nWe wish to profoundly thank Ira Jolles\, President of the Cahnman Foundation\, which made the critical research investments that brought about D’fina’s creation\, as well as Diarna sponsors Arthur Hoffman (President\, Leir Charitable Foundations)\, Karen Douglas\, Harold Grinspoon Foundation\, and the Elizabeth & Oliver Stanton Foundation. \nEchoes of Jewish Morocco — Josh Shamsi / Diarna Geo-Museum\nOctober 1st to 20th \nLeon Levy Gallery \nCenter for Jewish History\n15 w 16th St\nNew York NY 10011

SUMMARY:Nashaz
DESCRIPTION:Nashaz is an expression of Brian Prunkas lifelong devotion to both Arabic music and jazz. \nNashaz — Arabic Jazz Ensemble\nAugust 27th at 5 pm. \nPart of the American Sephardi Music Festival. \nCenter for Jewish History\n15 w 16th St\nNew York NY 10011 \n  \nNashaz is an expression of Brian Prunkas lifelong devotion to both Arabic music and jazz. Through his oud playing\, improvisations and compositions\, Brian finds common threads and natural sympathies between the disparate traditions of jazz and the maqam music of the middle east and North Africa\, resulting in an organic new sound: melodic and spirited\, ranging from wistful contemplation to kinetic intensity. \n  \nBio \nPrior to moving to Brooklyn in 2003\, Brian Prunka was living and performing in New Orleans\, where he spent his musically formative years honing his musical skills immersed in the jazz community. Always drawn to a wide range of music without regard to boundaries\, national or otherwise\, when fate introduced him to the oud he had an instant and profound connection with this storied instrument. A chance conversation led him to study with his mentor\, the renowned virtuoso Simon Shaheen\, who was impressed enough by his sincere passion for Arabic music to invite Prunka to perform with him on tour. He founded Nashaz to bring together his love of jazz and Arabic music.\nHe has performed throughout the U.S. and internationally with Simon Shaheen\, Michael Bates\, Ravish Momin\, the New York Arabic Orchestra\, the Vancouver International Orchestra\, Zikrayat\, the Near East River Ensemble\, and others. \nOther members of Nashaz joining in this concert will be Matt Darriau on clarinet and saxophone (Paradox Trio\, Klezmatics)\, Kenny Warren on trumpet (Slavic Soul Part\, Sway Machinery)\, John Murchison on bass (Zikrayat\, Ensemble Fanaa)\, and Dan Kurfirst on percussion.

SUMMARY:Jazz\, Spiritual Traditions & the Sephardi Turn
DESCRIPTION:Dedicated in Honor of Judge Abraham Sofaer \nWhat is the connection between jazz and spiritual traditions? Why have so many jazz musicians experienced their music in spiritual terms? \nJoin us on Sunday\, January 8th at 7:00PM as New York-based trumpet virtuoso Itamar Borochov and the ASF’s Director of Publications\, Aryeh Tepper\, orchestrate a listening party and free-flowing discussion about jazz and spiritual traditions\, including Sephardic spirituality. The event will feature both live and recorded music\, and audience members will be encouraged to take part in what should be a lively discussion. \nIsraeli-born\, Brooklyn-based trumpeter & composer Itamar Borochov connects lower Manhattan to North Africa\, modern Israel\, and ancient Bukhara\, celebrating traces of the divine that he finds in elegant sophistication\, Middle Eastern tradition and downhome blues. \nBorochov has working with legendary artists Curtis Fuller and Candido Camero\, and served as arranger and co-producer for acclaimed world music sensation Yemen Blues. His critically acclaimed debut recording Outset (2014) was included in the New York City Jazz Record’s Best of 2014 List\, and his forthcoming album Boomerang was chosen as “revelation of the month” by Jazz Magazine. \nBorochov has performed internationally at such prestigious venues and festivals as Lincoln Center (NY)\, The Kennedy Center (Washington DC)\, SummerStage at Central Park (NY)\, Roskilde Festival (Denmark)\, Ethno Port Festival (Poland)\, Montreal Jazz Festival\, and the Moscow Jazz Festival. \nThe February 2016 issue of Sephardi Ideas Monthly featured an interview with Borochov\, “Revitalizing the Roots\,” and the October  2016 issue featured the liner notes for Boomerang\, written by Aryeh Tepper. Borochov graciously performed at the ASF’s “Daniel Pearl Concert” in 2014 and\, in 2015\, played at the opening of “Sephardic Journeys: An Evening of Exploration\,” inaugurating the opening of the eponymous exhibit in The David Berg Rare Book Room. \n“Boomerang is an example of how American Jazz can merge with other cultures into a successful sound-cosmos – contemporary and looking forward\, subtle\, melodic\, soulful.” – NDR
