SUMMARY:Socrates\, Moses\, and the Long Fight Against Idolatry
DESCRIPTION:The American Sephardi Federation presents: \nSocrates\, Moses\, and the Long Fight Against Idolatry\nJoin us for a fascinating discussion celebrating the launch of Matt Gatton’s new book\, The Shadows of Socrates: The Heresy\, War\, and Treachery Behind the Trial of Socrates. \nSunday\, 14 April at 4:30PM ET \nIn-Person @ the ASF – Center for Jewish History \nTickets: $15-$500 \nThe trial of the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates is widely considered the most famous trial of all time. At age 70\, he was charged with impiety (a religious crime) and corrupting the youth\, but the reasons for these charges were left unexplained\, as the prosecution’s case was not recorded. There’s a reason for this: Socrates triggered the first great battle between philosophy and religion when he launched a searing critique of Athens’ most important and secretive idolatrous cult. Socrates has more in common with Moses\, Maimonides\, and Spinoza than you might ever have imagined. Sometimes the light of true reason must fight in the shadows.

SUMMARY:Why Spinoza Matters Now: Truth and Freedom in America Today
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the American Sephardi Federation and Jewish Lives at Yale University Press: \nJoin us for a lively and timely discussion celebrating the launch of Ian Buruma’s new book\, Spinoza: Freedom’s Messiah. Buruma will be joined on the panel by Steven Nadler\, Rebecca Newberger Goldstein\, & Clémence Boulouque \nSunday\, 31 March at 3:00PM EST \nIn-Person @ the ASF – Center for Jewish History \nTickets: $15-$500 \n350 years after his death\, the philosophy of Baruch Spinoza remains vitally relevant — especially in this period of deep political division and with the threat to liberal democracy not only in Europe and elsewhere\, but right here at home. Spinoza was the most open and important proponent of democracy\, toleration\, politics free from religious sectarian interference\, and freedom of expression in the early modern period. He was also “cancelled” (Herem) by Amsterdam’s Jewish community. \nSee this New Yorker review\, “Baruch Spinoza and the Art of Thinking in Dangerous Times\,” as well as Buruma’s latest\, “The 17th-Century Heretic We Could Really Use Now\,” in The New York Times \n \nBard College Professor Ian Buruma\, author of Spinoza: Freedom’s Messiah (Jewish Lives – Yale University Press) \n \nModerator\, Columbia University Professor Clémence Boulouque\, author of Another Modernity: Elia Benamozegh’s Jewish Universalism (Stanford University Press) \n \nUniversity of Wisconsin-Madison Professor Steven Nadler\, author of Spinoza: A Life (Cambridge University Press) and Menasseh ben Israel: Rabbi of Amsterdam (Jewish Lives – Yale University Press) \n \nDr. Rebecca Newberger Goldstein\, author of Betraying Spinoza: The Renegade Jew Who Gave Us Modernity (Jewish Encounters Series)

SUMMARY:Exclusive Authors Series with Anne Albert
DESCRIPTION:ASF’s Institute of Jewish Experience presents: \nExclusive Authors Series with Anne Albert\nJoin us for another episode of Exclusive Authors Series where Anne Albert discusses her book “Jewish Politics in Spinoza’s Amsterdam.” \nThursday\, 8 June at 12:00 PM EDT \n(Complimentary RSVP) \nAbout the book: \nThis book untangles a web of ideas about politics\, religion\, exile\, and community that emerged at a key moment in Jewish history and left a lasting mark on Jewish ideas. In the shadow of their former member Baruch Spinoza’s notoriety\, and amid the aftermath of the Sabbatian messianic movement\, the Spanish and Portuguese Jews of seventeenth-century Amsterdam underwent a conceptual shift that led them to treat their self-governed diaspora community as a commonwealth. Preoccupied by the question of why and how Jews should rule themselves in the absence of a biblical or messianic sovereign state or king\, they forged a creative synthesis of insights from early modern Christian politics and Jewish law and traditions to assess and argue over their formidable communal government. In so doing they shaped a proud new theopolitical self-understanding of their community as analogous to a Christian state. \nAbout the author: \nAnne Oravetz Albert is the Klatt Family Director for Public Programs at the Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. \nClick here or more about the book.

SUMMARY:From Constantine to Jerusalem - The Journey of Algerian Rabbi Eliahou Allouche
DESCRIPTION:ASF’s Institute of Jewish Experience presents: \nFrom Constantine to Jerusalem – The Journey of Algerian Rabbi Eliahou Allouche\nAlgerian Judaism is distinguished by three main traits: authenticity\, diversity\, singularity. These traits are engendered in the complexity of the history of Jews of Algeria\, a side that remains hidden and understudied because of the impact of the colonial period which summarizes the Jewish presence of 2000 years. \nThat’s why it’s important to shed more light on an important figure\, Rabbi Eliahou Allouche whose named in Arabic is “Sidi el Bahi\,” from the nineteenth-century. His exceptional career shows us how the Algerian Rabbi faced the challenges of modernity\, posed by French colonialism and the Crémieux decree. \nWednesday\, 31 May at 12:00 PM EDT \n(Complimentary RSVP)

SUMMARY:Exclusive Authors Series with Joseph Sassoon
DESCRIPTION:The ASF Institute of Jewish Experience presents: \nExclusive Authors Series with Joseph Sassoon\nJoin us for a new episode of Exclusive Authors Series with Joseph Sassoon discussing his new book “The Sassoons: The Great Global Merchants and the Making of an Empire.” \nTuesday\, 7 February at 12:00PM EDT \n(Complimentary RSVP) \nAbout the book: \nThe influential merchants of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries shaped the globalization of today. The Sassoons\, a Baghdadi-Jewish trading family\, built a global trading enterprise by taking advantage of major historical developments during the nineteenth century. Their story is not just one of an Arab Jewish family that settled in India\, traded in China\, and aspired to be British. It also presents an extraordinary vista into the world in which they lived and prospered economically\, politically\, and socially. \nThe Global Merchants is not only about their rise\, but also about their decline: why it happened\, how political and economic changes after the First World War adversely affected them\, and finally\, how realizing their aspirations to reach the upper echelons of British society led to their disengagement from business and prevented them from adapting to the new economic and political world order. \nAbout the author: \nJoseph Sassoon is the director of the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies and Professor of History and Political Economy at Georgetown University. He holds the al-Sabah Chair in Politics and Political Economy of the Arab World. He is also a Senior Associate Member at St Antony’s College\, Oxford. In 2013\, his book Saddam Hussein’s Ba‘th Party: Inside an Authoritarian Regime (Cambridge University Press\, 2012) won the prestigious British-Kuwait Prize for the best book on the Middle East. Sassoon completed his Ph.D at St Antony’s College\, Oxford. He has published extensively on Iraq and its economy and on the Middle East. His latest book is titled: “The Sassoons: The Great Global Merchants and the Making of an Empire” (Pantheon\, 2022). \nSponsorship opportunities available: \ninfo@americansephardi.org

SUMMARY:Warriors and Mystics: Notable Figures in Iranian Jewish History
DESCRIPTION:The ASF Institute of Jewish Experience presents: \nWarriors and Mystics\nIran’s Jewish community is one of the oldest diaspora communities in the world. But is there more to those 2700 years than Queen Esther and the Islamic Revolution? \nThis talk examines the lesser-known parts of Iran’s Jewish History\, a vast story of prophets\, autonomous nations\, divergent sects\, epic poetry\, and political intrigue. \nThrough the music\, languages\, foods\, writings\, traditions\, and stories of two millennia\, along with their ties to neighboring and faraway communities\, the Jews of Iran have forged a culture at once Persian and Jewish\, with traditions and aesthetics uniquely their own. \nIn this two-part series\, we will explore notable personalities in this rich history\, from over 1\,500 years ago and more recently. \nOn Sundays \n29 January at 12:00PM EDT\n5 February at 12:00PM EDT\n \n(Registration is required for each session; Tickets: $11) \nAbout the speaker: \nAlan Niku is a filmmaker\, writer\, and scholar of Mizrahi culture from San Luis Obispo\, California\, based in Los Angeles. SUMMARY:Sephardi Modernities Seminar Series\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Belzberg Program in Israel Studies at the University of Calgary and the Schusterman Center for Israel Studies at Brandeis University\, with the collaboration of the American Sephardi Federation\, Centro Sefarad Israel\, and the International Network for Jewish Thought\, present: \nSephardi Modernities Seminar Series\, 2023\n“The Future of Our Histories: Recollecting the Past\, Projecting the Future.” \nJoin us as we explore the relationship between our narratives about the past and the future to which we aspire. The ways in which scholars approach the stories\, events\, characters\, and historical processes of the Sephardi/Levantine past are inevitably guided by values\, by their moral and political beliefs. Which elements of the past do they strive to preserve\, reclaim and grant continuity? What are they trying to say about a potential future? Which stories become part of canonized history\, and which ones are dismissed as mere anecdotes? Which theoretical\, social\, political\, and cultural frameworks do they wrestle with\, and which do they seek to advance? \nOn Zoom \n(Registration is required for each session) \n2 February at 12:00PM EST \nThe Sephardi-Moorish Atlantic: The Two 1492s and the Multi-Chronotope of Orientalism  \nElla Shohat\, New York University\, in conversation with Yuval Evri\, Brandeis University \nSign-up Now!\n14 March at 12:00PM EST \nPreservation of Jewish Heritage and Debating Egypt’s Past and Present \nYoram Meital\, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev \nSign-up Now!\n23 March at 12:00PM EDT \nHow Do Judeo-Spanish Proverbs and Tales Communicate with Us and How Do We Communicate With Them? \nLital Belinko-Sabah\, Hebrew University of Jerusalem \nSign-up Now!\n18 April at 12:00PM EST \n‘Modernity’ and ‘Tradition’ on the Move: Spanish Moroccan Jews and their Diasporas \nAviad Moreno\, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev\, in conversation with Angy Cohen\, University of Calgary \nSign-up Now!\n9 May at 12:00PM EST \nSephardi Musical Modernities: Listening to the Past in the Future \nEdwin Seroussi\, Hebrew University of Jerusalem \nYair Dalal\, Composer\, violinist\, oud player\, singer\, and teacher \nSign-up Now!\n \nThroughout this year’s series we will discuss the future invoked by each way of looking at the past\, the political agendas of historical research\, and the values that unavoidably guide scholastic inquiry. Topics include the transmission of narratives among collectives and among researchers\, ownership of archives\, encounters with the past\, the academic legitimacy of certain topics and collectives\, vehicles of memory (music\, oral history\, proverbs\, etc.) and the construction of historical narratives. \nOrganized by Dr. Angy Cohen\, Inaugural Hy and Jenny Belzberg Postdoctoral Associate in Israel Studies\, Department of Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of Calgary\, and Dr. Yuval Evri\, Assistant Professor of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies on the Marash and Ocuin Chair in Ottoman\, Mizrahi\, and Sephardic Jewish Studies\, Brandeis University.
