SUMMARY:Exclusive Authors Series with Joseph Sassoon
DESCRIPTION:The ASF Institute of Jewish Experience presents: \nExclusive Authors Series with Joseph Sassoon\nJoin us for a new episode of Exclusive Authors Series with Joseph Sassoon discussing his new book “The Sassoons: The Great Global Merchants and the Making of an Empire.” \nTuesday\, 7 February at 12:00PM EDT \n(Complimentary RSVP) \nAbout the book: \nThe influential merchants of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries shaped the globalization of today. The Sassoons\, a Baghdadi-Jewish trading family\, built a global trading enterprise by taking advantage of major historical developments during the nineteenth century. Their story is not just one of an Arab Jewish family that settled in India\, traded in China\, and aspired to be British. It also presents an extraordinary vista into the world in which they lived and prospered economically\, politically\, and socially. \nThe Global Merchants is not only about their rise\, but also about their decline: why it happened\, how political and economic changes after the First World War adversely affected them\, and finally\, how realizing their aspirations to reach the upper echelons of British society led to their disengagement from business and prevented them from adapting to the new economic and political world order. \nAbout the author: \nJoseph Sassoon is the director of the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies and Professor of History and Political Economy at Georgetown University. He holds the al-Sabah Chair in Politics and Political Economy of the Arab World. He is also a Senior Associate Member at St Antony’s College\, Oxford. In 2013\, his book Saddam Hussein’s Ba‘th Party: Inside an Authoritarian Regime (Cambridge University Press\, 2012) won the prestigious British-Kuwait Prize for the best book on the Middle East. Sassoon completed his Ph.D at St Antony’s College\, Oxford. He has published extensively on Iraq and its economy and on the Middle East. His latest book is titled: “The Sassoons: The Great Global Merchants and the Making of an Empire” (Pantheon\, 2022). \nSponsorship opportunities available: \ninfo@americansephardi.org

SUMMARY:Warriors and Mystics: Notable Figures in Iranian Jewish History
DESCRIPTION:The ASF Institute of Jewish Experience presents: \nWarriors and Mystics\nIran’s Jewish community is one of the oldest diaspora communities in the world. But is there more to those 2700 years than Queen Esther and the Islamic Revolution? \nThis talk examines the lesser-known parts of Iran’s Jewish History\, a vast story of prophets\, autonomous nations\, divergent sects\, epic poetry\, and political intrigue. \nThrough the music\, languages\, foods\, writings\, traditions\, and stories of two millennia\, along with their ties to neighboring and faraway communities\, the Jews of Iran have forged a culture at once Persian and Jewish\, with traditions and aesthetics uniquely their own. \nIn this two-part series\, we will explore notable personalities in this rich history\, from over 1\,500 years ago and more recently. \nOn Sundays \n29 January at 12:00PM EDT\n5 February at 12:00PM EDT\n \n(Registration is required for each session; Tickets: $11) \nAbout the speaker: \nAlan Niku is a filmmaker\, writer\, and scholar of Mizrahi culture from San Luis Obispo\, California\, based in Los Angeles. A native speaker of Persian\, he spends his time learning related Jewish languages\, deciphering Judeo-Persian manuscripts\, and interviewing community members about their stories. He is also a musician and an amateur chef\, teaches history and Jewish heritage at various levels\, and seeks to educate the world about the underrepresented cultures of the Middle East through his writing and films. \nSponsorship opportunities available: \ninfo@americansephardi.org

SUMMARY:Sephardi Modernities Seminar Series\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Belzberg Program in Israel Studies at the University of Calgary and the Schusterman Center for Israel Studies at Brandeis University\, with the collaboration of the American Sephardi Federation\, Centro Sefarad Israel\, and the International Network for Jewish Thought\, present: \nSephardi Modernities Seminar Series\, 2023\n“The Future of Our Histories: Recollecting the Past\, Projecting the Future.” \nJoin us as we explore the relationship between our narratives about the past and the future to which we aspire. The ways in which scholars approach the stories\, events\, characters\, and historical processes of the Sephardi/Levantine past are inevitably guided by values\, by their moral and political beliefs. Which elements of the past do they strive to preserve\, reclaim and grant continuity? What are they trying to say about a potential future? Which stories become part of canonized history\, and which ones are dismissed as mere anecdotes? Which theoretical\, social\, political\, and cultural frameworks do they wrestle with\, and which do they seek to advance? \nOn Zoom \n(Registration is required for each session) \n2 February at 12:00PM EST \nThe Sephardi-Moorish Atlantic: The Two 1492s and the Multi-Chronotope of Orientalism  \nElla Shohat\, New York University\, in conversation with Yuval Evri\, Brandeis University \nSign-up Now!\n14 March at 12:00PM EST \nPreservation of Jewish Heritage and Debating Egypt’s Past and Present \nYoram Meital\, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev \nSign-up Now!\n23 March at 12:00PM EDT \nHow Do Judeo-Spanish Proverbs and Tales Communicate with Us and How Do We Communicate With Them? \nLital Belinko-Sabah\, Hebrew University of Jerusalem \nSign-up Now!\n18 April at 12:00PM EST \n‘Modernity’ and ‘Tradition’ on the Move: Spanish Moroccan Jews and their Diasporas \nAviad Moreno\, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev\, in conversation with Angy Cohen\, University of Calgary \nSign-up Now!\n9 May at 12:00PM EST \nSephardi Musical Modernities: Listening to the Past in the Future \nEdwin Seroussi\, Hebrew University of Jerusalem \nYair Dalal\, Composer\, violinist\, oud player\, singer\, and teacher \nSign-up Now!\n \nThroughout this year’s series we will discuss the future invoked by each way of looking at the past\, the political agendas of historical research\, and the values that unavoidably guide scholastic inquiry. SUMMARY:A Yemenite Jerusalem Power Couple: The Story of Rabbi and Rabbanit Kapach
DESCRIPTION:The ASF Institute of Jewish Experience presents: \nA Yemenite Jerusalem Power Couple: The Story of Rabbi and Rabbanit Kapach\nJoin us for a movie and discussion! \nA link to the film\, Two Legacies three days before the program to watch at their leisure. Einat Kapach will join on Zoom to talk about making the movie\, about her grandparents\, their contributions to the Jewish world\, and how we each gained from their legacy. \nWednesday\, 11 January at 12:00PM EDT \n(Tickets: $15) \nAbout the film: \nYosef and Bracha married when they were 12 in Sana`a\, Yemen and lived together for close to 70 years. Yosef became absorbed in his books\, while Bracha took care of the needy. Before he dies\, Rabbi Yosef Kapach hands his granddaughter Einat\, director of the film\, a bundle of pages which uncover a secret he has kept close to his heart his entire life- the secret of the theological war that split the Yemenite Jewish community. The documents tell of his persecution as a young orphan by the Jews of Yemen\, a persecution that continues until the day he dies in Israel. Having read these words\, Einat sets out on a journey to understand why he chose her to pass on the legacy and how he managed to turn his life around from such a lonely point and to become a world-famous Jewish philosopher. \nAbout the director: \nEinat Kapach is a screenwriter and director who lives and creates in her native Jerusalem. A graduate of the Ma’aleh Film School with an MA from the Schechter Institute in Jerusalem\, Einat lectures on film and Jewish identity in different communities in Israel and abroad including small Jewish communities in the US and Africa. She directed the award-winning film Jephtah’s Daughterwhich played at numerous festivals around the world. She was a diarist in the film Peace Diarieswhich details the lives of Israelis and Palestinians over a six month period. Einat is frequently invited to lecture at various foundations and was a judge at the 2009 Jerusalem Film Festival. She recently directed the documentary film Two Legacies and her feature script At the End of a Long Daywon the Minister of Education’s award for Artists in the field of Jewish Culture. \nSponsorship opportunities available: \ninfo@americansephardi.org

SUMMARY:Exclusive Authors Series with Alan Verskin
DESCRIPTION:The ASF Institute of Jewish Experience presents: \nExclusive Authors Series with Alan Verskin\nJoin us for this episode of Exclusive Authors Series with Alan Verskin discussing his new book “A Vision of Yemen.” \nTuesday\, 6 December at 12:00PM EDT\n(Complimentary RSVP) \nAbout the book: \nIn 1869\, Hayyim Habshush\, a Yemeni Jew\, accompanied the European orientalist Joseph Halévy on his archaeological tour of Yemen. Twenty years later\, Habshush wrote A Vision of Yemen\, a memoir of their travels\, that provides a vivid account of daily life\, religion\, and politics. More than a simple travelogue\, it is a work of trickster-tales\, thick anthropological descriptions\, and reflections on Jewish–Muslim relations. At its heart lies the fractious and intimate relationship between the Yemeni coppersmith and the “enlightened” European scholar and the collision between the cultures each represents. The book thus offers a powerful indigenous response to European Orientalism. \nThis edition is the first English translation of Habshush’s writings from the original Judeo-Arabic and Hebrew and includes an accessible historical introduction to the work. The translation maintains Habshush’s gripping style and rich portrayal of the diverse communities and cultures of Yemen\, offering a potent mixture of artful storytelling and cultural criticism\, suffused with humor and empathy. Habshush writes about the daily lives of men and women\, rich and poor\, Jewish and Muslim\, during a turbulent period of war and both Ottoman and European imperialist encroachment. With this translation\, Alan Verskin recovers the lost voice of a man passionately committed to his land and people. \nAbout the authors: \nAlan Verskin is Associate Professor of History at the University of Rhode Island. \nClick here for more about the book. \nSponsorship opportunities available:\ninfo@americansephardi.org

SUMMARY:Exclusive Authors Series with Judith Roumani
DESCRIPTION:The ASF Institute of Jewish Experience presents: \nExclusive Authors Series with Judith Roumani\nJoin us for this episode of our Exclusive Authors Series with Judith Roumani discussing her new book “Francophone Sephardic Fiction: Writing Migration\, Diaspora\, and Modernity.” \nTuesday\, 25 October at 12:00PM EST\n(Complimentary RSVP) \nAbout the book:\n“Francophone Sephardic Fiction” approaches modern Sephardic literature in a comparative way to draw out similarities and differences among selected francophone novelists from various countries\, with a focus on North Africa. The definition of Sepharad here is broader than just Spain: it embraces Jews whose ancestors had lived in North Africa for centuries\, even before the arrival of Islam\, and who still today trace their allegiance to ways of being Jewish that go back to Babylon\, as do those whose ancestors spent a few hundred years in Iberia. The author traces the strong influence of oral storytelling on modern novelists of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries and explores the idea of the portable homeland\, as exile and migration engulfed the long-rooted Sephardic communities. \nAbout the author:\nJudith Roumani is founder and director of the Jewish Institute of Pitigliano\, and founder and editor of the online journal Sephardic Horizons\, which appears three times a year (https://www.sephardichorizons.org). She received a BA Honors in Spanish and French from the University of Nottingham\, an MA in Latin American Studies from the University of London\, and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Rutgers. She has taught Spanish and Sephardic studies at the University of Maryland\, College Park\, and other colleges in the Washington DC area. She has also been a director of publications\, professional translator\, an associate ditor or author of five books and a monograph\, and her work has been translated into Hebrew\, Italian\, and French. \nFor more about the book: https://rowman.com/ISBN/9781793620101/Francophone-Sephardic-Fiction-Writing-Migration-Diaspora-and-Modernity \nSponsorship opportunities available:\ninfo@americansephardi.org

SUMMARY:Exclusive Authors Series with Regina M. Tessone
DESCRIPTION:The ASF Institute of Jewish Experience presents: \nExclusive Authors Series with Regina M. Tessone\nJoin us for a new episode of the Exclusive Authors Series with Regine M. Tessone who discusses her book “Monavar’s Journey.” \nTuesday\, 20 September at 12:00PM EST\n(Complimentary RSVP) \nAbout the book:\nOn February 1\, 1979\, Regine Monavar Tessone recalls running through the Mehrabad airport with her parents and three brothers to board the last flight out of Tehran on the eve of the Islamic Revolution. The pilot announced as they entered the aircraft\, “You are the lucky ones! The airport is now closed and the Ayatollah Khomeini has arrived.” In this intimate memoir\, Monavar (a Farsi name meaning light) recreates the life of her Persian Jewish family before they fled Iran and her own adventures in their new home in America. Always buoyant (her maiden name Omid means hope)\, she describes reuniting with her mother’s family in Brooklyn\, visiting Israel and serving as a volunteer\, falling in love with a non-Persian Jew\, and becoming a successful fashion designer. Her story\, at once personal and paradigmatic\, reflects her nostalgia for the homeland of her youth and her embrace of the opportunities of her adopted homeland in the United States as a successful Iranian-Jewish immigrant. \nAbout the author:\nREGINE MONAVAR TESSONE is an Iranian American fashion designer. As a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology\, she founded Aqua Modesta\, a unique line of modest women’s swimwear and sportswear that attained worldwide success. Her initial professional goals achieved\, she wrote this memoir to fulfill a lifelong dream: to share the story of her family’s incredible escape on the last flight out of Tehran. She resides with her husband and children in New York and Jerusalem. \nFor more about the book: https://www.amazon.com/Monavars-Journey-Bridge-Regine-Tessone/dp/163837306X \nSponsorship opportunities available:\ninfo@americansephardi.org

SUMMARY:Bene Israel Selichot
DESCRIPTION:The ASF Institute of Jewish Experience presents: \nBene Israel Selichot\nJoin us as Hazzan Joshua Daniels introduces us to the Bene Israel piyyutim and selichot tunes as he shares stories from his life within and outside the Bene Israel community. \nTuesday\, 30 August at 12:00PM EST\n(Complimentary RSVP) \nAbout the speaker:\nJoshua Daniels was born in Bombay\, India to an observant Jewish family. He is a member of the Bene Israel community which is the largest and oldest Jewish community from India. At an early age\, his father encouraged him to read Hebrew and to follow the Bene Israel traditions with an emphasis on music and singing. His father Samuel Elijah Z”l is the greatest influence on Joshua’s life. He ensured that Joshua received a Jewish education and appointed the local hazzan in Bombay from the Etz Haeem synagogue to train him in Torah reading from the age of Bar Mitzvah. \nAt the age of 15\, Joshua immigrated to Israel with his family before ultimately moving to Toronto\, Canada. Joshua has been living in Toronto for 29 years with his wife and daughter. He has served as a chazzan and baal koreh (Torah reader) in various congregations. Joshua has expanded his knowledge and can perform the prayer services and Torah reading in Ashkenazi\, Yerushalmi and Moroccan tropes. He continues to expand his singing abilities and is self- taught. He also has enriched his performance of the Bene Israel tunes and leads a minyan for High Holidays. He has taught more than 100 boys for their Bar Mitzvah\, many of which could not read Hebrew. Joshua is ambitious\, he continues to discover further aspects of Jewish prayer and song and takes pleasure in sharing his expertise. \nSponsorship opportunities available:\ninfo@americansephardi.org
