SUMMARY:Warriors and Mystics: Notable Figures in Iranian Jewish History
DESCRIPTION:The ASF Institute of Jewish Experience presents: \nWarriors and Mystics\nIran’s Jewish community is one of the oldest diaspora communities in the world. But is there more to those 2700 years than Queen Esther and the Islamic Revolution? \nThis talk examines the lesser-known parts of Iran’s Jewish History\, a vast story of prophets\, autonomous nations\, divergent sects\, epic poetry\, and political intrigue. \nThrough the music\, languages\, foods\, writings\, traditions\, and stories of two millennia\, along with their ties to neighboring and faraway communities\, the Jews of Iran have forged a culture at once Persian and Jewish\, with traditions and aesthetics uniquely their own. \nIn this two-part series\, we will explore notable personalities in this rich history\, from over 1\,500 years ago and more recently. \nOn Sundays \n29 January at 12:00PM EDT \n5 February at 12:00PM EDT \n(Registration is required for each session; Tickets: $11) \nAbout the speaker: \nAlan Niku is a filmmaker\, writer\, and scholar of Mizrahi culture from San Luis Obispo\, California\, based in Los Angeles. A native speaker of Persian\, he spends his time learning related Jewish languages\, deciphering Judeo-Persian manuscripts\, and interviewing community members about their stories. He is also a musician and an amateur chef\, teaches history and Jewish heritage at various levels\, and seeks to educate the world about the underrepresented cultures of the Middle East through his writing and films. \nSponsorship opportunities available: \ninfo@americansephardi.org

SUMMARY:A Yemenite Jerusalem Power Couple: The Story of Rabbi and Rabbanit Kapach
DESCRIPTION:The ASF Institute of Jewish Experience presents: \nA Yemenite Jerusalem Power Couple: The Story of Rabbi and Rabbanit Kapach\nJoin us for a movie and discussion! \nA link to the film\, Two Legacies three days before the program to watch at their leisure. Einat Kapach will join on Zoom to talk about making the movie\, about her grandparents\, their contributions to the Jewish world\, and how we each gained from their legacy. \nWednesday\, 11 January at 12:00PM EDT \n(Tickets: $15) \nAbout the film: \nYosef and Bracha married when they were 12 in Sana`a\, Yemen and lived together for close to 70 years. Yosef became absorbed in his books\, while Bracha took care of the needy. Before he dies\, Rabbi Yosef Kapach hands his granddaughter Einat\, director of the film\, a bundle of pages which uncover a secret he has kept close to his heart his entire life- the secret of the theological war that split the Yemenite Jewish community. The documents tell of his persecution as a young orphan by the Jews of Yemen\, a persecution that continues until the day he dies in Israel. Having read these words\, Einat sets out on a journey to understand why he chose her to pass on the legacy and how he managed to turn his life around from such a lonely point and to become a world-famous Jewish philosopher. \nAbout the director: \nEinat Kapach is a screenwriter and director who lives and creates in her native Jerusalem. A graduate of the Ma’aleh Film School with an MA from the Schechter Institute in Jerusalem\, Einat lectures on film and Jewish identity in different communities in Israel and abroad including small Jewish communities in the US and Africa. She directed the award-winning film Jephtah’s Daughterwhich played at numerous festivals around the world. She was a diarist in the film Peace Diarieswhich details the lives of Israelis and Palestinians over a six month period. Einat is frequently invited to lecture at various foundations and was a judge at the 2009 Jerusalem Film Festival. She recently directed the documentary film Two Legacies and her feature script At the End of a Long Daywon the Minister of Education’s award for Artists in the field of Jewish Culture. \nSponsorship opportunities available: \ninfo@americansephardi.org

SUMMARY:Exclusive Authors Series with Alan Verskin
DESCRIPTION:The ASF Institute of Jewish Experience presents: \nExclusive Authors Series with Alan Verskin\nJoin us for this episode of Exclusive Authors Series with Alan Verskin discussing his new book “A Vision of Yemen.” \nTuesday\, 6 December at 12:00PM EDT\n(Complimentary RSVP) \nAbout the book: \nIn 1869\, Hayyim Habshush\, a Yemeni Jew\, accompanied the European orientalist Joseph Halévy on his archaeological tour of Yemen. Twenty years later\, Habshush wrote A Vision of Yemen\, a memoir of their travels\, that provides a vivid account of daily life\, religion\, and politics. More than a simple travelogue\, it is a work of trickster-tales\, thick anthropological descriptions\, and reflections on Jewish–Muslim relations. At its heart lies the fractious and intimate relationship between the Yemeni coppersmith and the “enlightened” European scholar and the collision between the cultures each represents. The book thus offers a powerful indigenous response to European Orientalism. \nThis edition is the first English translation of Habshush’s writings from the original Judeo-Arabic and Hebrew and includes an accessible historical introduction to the work. The translation maintains Habshush’s gripping style and rich portrayal of the diverse communities and cultures of Yemen\, offering a potent mixture of artful storytelling and cultural criticism\, suffused with humor and empathy. Habshush writes about the daily lives of men and women\, rich and poor\, Jewish and Muslim\, during a turbulent period of war and both Ottoman and European imperialist encroachment. With this translation\, Alan Verskin recovers the lost voice of a man passionately committed to his land and people. \nAbout the authors: \nAlan Verskin is Associate Professor of History at the University of Rhode Island. \nClick here for more about the book. \nSponsorship opportunities available:\ninfo@americansephardi.org

SUMMARY:Exclusive Authors Series with Judith Roumani
DESCRIPTION:The ASF Institute of Jewish Experience presents: \nExclusive Authors Series with Judith Roumani\nJoin us for this episode of our Exclusive Authors Series with Judith Roumani discussing her new book “Francophone Sephardic Fiction: Writing Migration\, Diaspora\, and Modernity.” \nTuesday\, 25 October at 12:00PM EST\n(Complimentary RSVP) \nAbout the book:\n“Francophone Sephardic Fiction” approaches modern Sephardic literature in a comparative way to draw out similarities and differences among selected francophone novelists from various countries\, with a focus on North Africa. The definition of Sepharad here is broader than just Spain: it embraces Jews whose ancestors had lived in North Africa for centuries\, even before the arrival of Islam\, and who still today trace their allegiance to ways of being Jewish that go back to Babylon\, as do those whose ancestors spent a few hundred years in Iberia. The author traces the strong influence of oral storytelling on modern novelists of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries and explores the idea of the portable homeland\, as exile and migration engulfed the long-rooted Sephardic communities. \nAbout the author:\nJudith Roumani is founder and director of the Jewish Institute of Pitigliano\, and founder and editor of the online journal Sephardic Horizons\, which appears three times a year (https://www.sephardichorizons.org). She received a BA Honors in Spanish and French from the University of Nottingham\, an MA in Latin American Studies from the University of London\, and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Rutgers. She has taught Spanish and Sephardic studies at the University of Maryland\, College Park\, and other colleges in the Washington DC area. She has also been a director of publications\, professional translator\, an associate ditor or author of five books and a monograph\, and her work has been translated into Hebrew\, Italian\, and French. \nFor more about the book: https://rowman.com/ISBN/9781793620101/Francophone-Sephardic-Fiction-Writing-Migration-Diaspora-and-Modernity \nSponsorship opportunities available:\ninfo@americansephardi.org

SUMMARY:Exclusive Authors Series with Regina M. Tessone
DESCRIPTION:The ASF Institute of Jewish Experience presents: \nExclusive Authors Series with Regina M. Tessone\nJoin us for a new episode of the Exclusive Authors Series with Regine M. Tessone who discusses her book “Monavar’s Journey.” \nTuesday\, 20 September at 12:00PM EST\n(Complimentary RSVP) \nAbout the book:\nOn February 1\, 1979\, Regine Monavar Tessone recalls running through the Mehrabad airport with her parents and three brothers to board the last flight out of Tehran on the eve of the Islamic Revolution. The pilot announced as they entered the aircraft\, “You are the lucky ones! The airport is now closed and the Ayatollah Khomeini has arrived.” In this intimate memoir\, Monavar (a Farsi name meaning light) recreates the life of her Persian Jewish family before they fled Iran and her own adventures in their new home in America. Always buoyant (her maiden name Omid means hope)\, she describes reuniting with her mother’s family in Brooklyn\, visiting Israel and serving as a volunteer\, falling in love with a non-Persian Jew\, and becoming a successful fashion designer. Her story\, at once personal and paradigmatic\, reflects her nostalgia for the homeland of her youth and her embrace of the opportunities of her adopted homeland in the United States as a successful Iranian-Jewish immigrant. \nAbout the author:\nREGINE MONAVAR TESSONE is an Iranian American fashion designer. As a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology\, she founded Aqua Modesta\, a unique line of modest women’s swimwear and sportswear that attained worldwide success. Her initial professional goals achieved\, she wrote this memoir to fulfill a lifelong dream: to share the story of her family’s incredible escape on the last flight out of Tehran. She resides with her husband and children in New York and Jerusalem. \nFor more about the book: https://www.amazon.com/Monavars-Journey-Bridge-Regine-Tessone/dp/163837306X \nSponsorship opportunities available:\ninfo@americansephardi.org

SUMMARY:New Works Wednesday with Mark Schneegurt
DESCRIPTION:The ASF Institute of Jewish Experience presents: \nNew Works Wednesday with Mark Schneegurt\nJoin us for this episode of New Works Wednesdays where Mark Schneergurt discusses “Anthology of Religious Poetry from the Mexican Inquisition Trials of 16th-Century CryptoJews.” \nWednesday\, 29 June at 12:00PM EST\n(Complimentary RSVP) \nAbout the book: \nA century after being expelled from Portugal\, cryptoJews in Mexico\, false converts to Christianity\, could not speak of their beliefs for fear of becoming embroiled in the imprisonment\, torture\, and death in flames that characterized the Inquisition. Without written texts\, the Jewish liturgy lost\, clans of cryptoJews created a unique body of religious poetry\, connecting them to the Laws of Moses\, seeking redemption from sin\, or hoping for an escape from their embittered lives. The Carvajal clan was led by Luis el Mozo\, an alumbrado\, a mystic\, and his Judaizing sisters. Once discovered to be secretly practicing Judaism\, years of suffering at the hands of the Inquisitors were meticulously recorded in the transcripts of their long demeaning trials. The Carvajal’s friends\, spouses\, children and grandchildren were implicated as Judaizers\, with many being reconciled by the Church to secular authorities to be burned alive at massive public ceremonies. The burning of Luis and his sisters was the main attraction for cheering crowds at the auto de fé of 1596 in Mexico City. The cruelty of the Inquisitors was matched by their attention to legal detail and testimonies made at trial. Buried within thousands of pages of transcripts\, hiding in library special collections of rare books around the world are the only remnants of the religious poetry that sustained cryptoJews hiding in Mexico. Anthology uncovers these hidden treasures! \nAbout the author: \nMark A. Schneegurt is an author\, educator\, scientist\, and entrepreneur. His books range from scholarly works on science\, religion\, and literature to popular books on The Beatles. He has authored 80+ publications and has made 200+ public presentations of his works. \nSponsorship opportunities available: \ninfo@americansephardi.org

SUMMARY:New Works Wednesday with Rachel Frankel and JJCPF
DESCRIPTION:The ASF Institute of Jewish Experience presents: \nNew Works Wednesday with Rachel Frankel and JJCPF \nJoin us for a special New Works Wednesdays with the JJCPF (Jamaican Jewish Cemeteries Preservation Fund). \nIn 1661\, the English Crown offered 30 acres to settle in Jamaica. Jews\, overwhelmingly Spanish Portuguese\, came. By 1800\, Jews had settled throughout and their cemeteries ringed the island. Today\, Jamaica is the final resting place for\, by one count\, roughly 10\,000 Jews. The one cemetery that remains open for burial is roughly three acres in size. It is located in the heart of Kingston\, referred to as the Orange Street Cemetery\, maintained by the United Congregation of Israelites Jamaica\, and approaching its 200th year. Since 2007\, volunteers\, led by Rachel Frankel\, have documented Jamaica’s Jewish cemeteries and since 2017\, the JJCPF (Jamaican Jewish Cemeteries Preservation Fund) has been working to preserve the cemeteries. \nOn May 25\, Rachel Frankel and some of JJCPF’s board members will introduce Jamaica’s Jewish cemeteries\, provide virtual tours of the Falmouth Cemetery and the Orange Street Cemetery\, and demonstrate their newly launched site specific online searchable database. \nWednesday\, 25 May at 12:00PM EST \n(Complimentary RSVP) \n 12PM EST ◊ 7PM Jerusalem  \nAbout the speaker:\nRachel Frankel is principal of the firm Rachel Frankel Architecture in NYC.
